경계 붕괴의 괴물성 : 『좀비』의 비체적 형식 실험과 틈의 윤리 = Monstrosity in the Collapse of Boundaries: Abject Form and the Ethics of Gaps in Zombie

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 조이스 캐롤 오츠의 『좀비』가 현대 사회에서 관습적으로 소비되어 온 연쇄 살인범 서사에 형식적 차원에서 개입하여 익숙한 서사의 작동 방식을 어떻게 의도적으로 왜곡시키는지 분석한다. 현대 고딕 괴물로서의 연쇄살인범은 전통적 괴물과는 다르게 경계 밖에서 침입해 들어오는 타자가 아니라, 정상성의 외피를 지닌 채 사회 내부에 기거하는 존재다. 이에 본 논문은 크리스테바의 비체 개념을 이론적 틀로 삼아 『좀비』가 형식적 실험으로서의 언어 질서에서 이탈한 타이포그래피의 사용과 연쇄살인범 서사를 뒤틀고 생략함으로써 발생하는 서술의 틈을 분석한다. 비규범적인 타이포그래피의 사용은 불규칙적으로 보이는 이탤릭체, 대문자, 삽화로 텍스트 표면에 등장하며 각각 발화의 층위를 교란하고, 상징계에서 기표와 기의의 간극을 드러내며, 텍스트와 비텍스트 사이에서 경계의 붕괴를 구현한다. 서술의 틈은 의미화가 멈추는 비체화된 틈으로 작동하며, 작품 속 주인공이자 화자인 쿠엔틴이 규범의 전복을 통해 자신만의 비체적 질서를 구축하려 하지만 결국 상징계 정립에 실패함을 드러내는 서사 형식으로 기능한다. 이를 통해 『좀비』가 주제나 인물 차원으로 재현되던 연쇄살인범 서사의 작동 방식을 전복하고, 현대 고딕의 괴물성을 텍스트의 형식과 비체적 구조 속에서 구현한 작품임을 밝힌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis examines how Joyce Carol Oates’s Zombie intervenes in contemporary serial killer narratives through formal strategies, deliberately distorting their conventional mechanisms. In contemporary Gothic literature, the serial killer no longer appears as a figure that intrudes from outside social boundaries but instead inhabits society from within, in the guise of normalcy. Drawing on Julia Kristeva’s concept of abjection as a theoretical framework, this study analyzes the novel’s formal strategies, focusing on the idiosyncratic use of typography that departs from linguistic order and on the narrative gaps produced through the distortion and omission of serial killer narrative conventions. Non-normative typography consists of the irregular use of italics, capitalization, and illustrations. Appearing on the textual surface, these devices disrupt layers of enunciation, expose the gap between signifier and signified within the symbolic order, and effect the collapse of boundaries between text and non-text. The narrative gaps function as abject spaces in which meaning is suspended, structuring a narrative form that reveals the failure of Quentin, the protagonist and narrator, to establish his own symbolic system. Through this analysis, the thesis demonstrates that Zombie overturns the conventional thematic and character-centered structure of serial killer narratives and enacts the monstrosity of the contemporary Gothic through textual form and abject structure.
