    Superfluids are characterized by a remarkable absence of viscosity, which theoretically allows for flow without friction. This raises a fundamental question as to whether a flow induced in such a system should persist indefinitely. If turbulence and energy dissipation are indeed observed, can we still justify defining the system as a superfluid?

    The irregular flows emerging in these quantum systems are broadly known as quantum turbulence. While early studies of superfluid helium focused on the dynamics of quantized vortices and their interactions with the normal fluid, the emergence of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates has opened a new frontier through their high degree of tunability. Researchers can now precisely control interaction strengths and densities to characterize non-equilibrium dynamics through universal scaling or to explore elusive phenomena such as weak wave turbulence.

    The most prominent feature of classical turbulence is the scaling law found in its auto-correlation functions. Under the assumption of statistical homogeneity and isotropy at high Reynolds numbers, Kolmogorov postulated an inertial range where the statistical properties are determined solely by the energy dissipation rate. This leads to the well-known -5/3 power law. This type of statistical universality has been confirmed across various platforms ranging from liquid helium to quantum gases and from vortex-dominated to wave-dominated regimes.

    This thesis investigates the dynamical characteristics of turbulence generated via spin degrees of freedom in F=1 $^{23}$Na Bose-Einstein condensates. Deviating from conventional local density perturbation methods, we introduce a novel mechanism that creates a steady-state turbulent regime by winding spatial spin textures to drive irregular spin and mass flows. To verify the physical identity of this state and understand its hydrodynamic properties, we present two key studies.

    Identification of the inertial range through an analysis of the spin-interaction energy spectra}

    By examining the spectra across three spatial axes, we demonstrate spin isotropy and observe a -7/3 scaling law, which serves as a distinct signature of spin turbulence in contrast to classical Kolmogorov scaling. This confirms the presence of an inertial range in the spin sector and elucidates the energy injection mechanism by monitoring the relaxation of the turbulent state.

    Observation of the wave damping against a turbulent background

    A key characteristic of classical turbulence is the dissipation of waves driven by the underlying flow. In this work, we excite the quadrupole collective mode in a quiet steady-state spin turbulence to measure its damping rate. Furthermore, we quantitatively analyze how spin degrees of freedom contribute to damping at finite temperatures under non-turbulent conditions. This allowed us to isolate the specific influence of the turbulence.

    In conclusion, this work bridges the gap between microscopic spin dynamics and the macroscopic statistical properties of turbulence. By investigating the energy transfer mechanisms and the resulting hydrodynamic modifications in a spinor condensate, this research extends our understanding of the physical pathways through which inviscid quantum systems dissipate energy.

    초유체(Superfluid)는 점성이 없어 마찰이 존재하지 않는 독특한 유체이다.
    그렇다면 마찰이 없는 초유체에서 유도된 흐름은 영원히 지속되어야 하는가? 만약 난류(Turbulence)와 에너지 소산이 관측된다면, 이를 여전히 초유체라 부를 수 있는가?

    초유체 시스템에서 나타나는 불규칙한 흐름을 통틀어 '양자 난류(Quantum Turbulence)'라 부른다. 과거 헬륨 초유체 연구가 주로 와동(Vortex)과 정상 유체(Normal fluid) 간의 상호작용이나 와동 자체의 동역학에 주목했다면, 원자 기체 보즈-아인슈타인 응축체 (BEC)의 등장은 시스템의 높은 자유도(Tunability)를 바탕으로 새로운 장을 열었다. 이제 연구자들은 상호작용 세기와 밀도를 정밀하게 제어하며 비평형 시스템의 보편적 동역학 스케일링(Dynamic scaling)을 규명하기도 하며, 이전에는 관측하기 어려웠던 약파동 난류(Weak wave turbulence)와 같은 현상을 탐구하고 있다.

    고전 난류의 가장 대표적인 특징은 자기 상관(Auto-correlation) 함수가 따르는 스케일링 법칙이다. 콜모고로프(Kolmogorov)는 매우 높은 레이놀즈 수에서 난류가 공간적으로 균질하고 등방적이라는 가정하에, 점성의 영향 없이 오직 에너지 소산율(Energy dissipation rate)에 의해 통계적 성질이 결정되는 '관성 영역(Inertial range)'이 존재함을 보였다. 이 영역에서 난류는 통계적 멱법칙(Power-law)을 따르며, 이것이 그 유명한 $-5/3$ 스케일링 법칙이다. 이러한 통계적 보편성은 헬륨부터 BEC에 이르기까지, 와동 난류와 파동 난류 모두에서 그 존재가 확인된 바 있다.

    본 학위 논문에서는 $^{23}$Na 보즈-아인슈타인 응집체의 $F=1$ 상태에서 스핀 자유도를 활용하여 생성된 난류의 동역학적 특징을 탐구한다. 특히 본 연구는 기존의 국소 밀도 섭동(Local density perturbation) 방식에서 탈피하여, 공간적으로 불규칙한 스핀 텍스처를 만들어, 불규칙한 스핀 및 질량 흐름을 '정상 상태(Steady state)'로 유지하는 새로운 생성 메커니즘을 제시한다. 이러한 상태가 물리적 난류로서의 정체성을 갖는지, 그리고 어떤 유체역학적 특징을 보이는지 규명하기 위해 다음의 두 가지 연구를 수행하였다.

    첫째, 스핀 상호작용 에너지 스펙트럼 분석을 통한 관성 영역의 규명이다. 세 축에 대한 스핀 상호작용 에너지의 스펙트럼을 조사하여 스핀 분포의 등방성을 증명하였으며, 고전 난류와 차별화되는 스핀 난류 특유의 $-7/3$ 스케일링 법칙을 관측하였다. 이를 통해 스핀 난류에서도 고전 난류와 유사한 관성 영역이 존재함을 확인하였고, 난류의 이완(Relaxation) 과정을 추적하여 에너지 주입 메커니즘을 규명하였다.

    둘째, 난류 배경에서의 파동 감쇠(Wave damping) 메커니즘 연구이다. 고전 난류의 주요 특징 중 하나는 유체의 흐름에 의한 파동의 소산이다. 본 연구에서는 앞서 구현한 정상 상태의 '조용한' 스핀 난류 배경에서 집단 진동 모드 중 하나인 사중극자 모드(Quadrupole mode)를 여기시켜 감쇠율을 조사하였다. 이 과정에서 유한한 온도 조건 하에 스핀 자유도가 비난류 상태의 감쇠에 미치는 영향을 정량적으로 분석하여 난류에 의한 효과와 분리하였다.

    결론적으로 본 연구는 미시적인 스핀 동역학과 거시적인 난류의 통계적 성질을 연결하였으며, 스핀 난류에서의 에너지 전달 메커니즘과 난류가 보즈-아인슈타인 응집체의 유체역학적 성질에 미치는 영향을 밝혀내었다. 이는 점성이 없는 양자 시스템에서 난류가 에너지를 소산시키는 물리적 경로에 대한 이해를 확장하는 중요한 학술적 기여를 할 것으로 기대된다.
