In response to the increasing interest in hydrogen as an environmentally friendly fuel, central air injection has been suggested as a method to suppress flashback and NOx emissions. However, its impact on flame blow-off is little understood. This study experimentally and numerically investigates the effects of varying the quantity of central air on the blow-off limits of premixed CH4/H2 flames stabilized by a bluff body in a swirl combustor. The central air-to-main flow ratio was systematically modified from 1% to 15%, and the corresponding flame stability limits were measured using OH* chemiluminescence imaging. The experimental results demonstrate a clear non-monotonic reliance of blow-off on central air injection. Increasing the central air flow rate up to 5% of the main flow initially destabilizes the flame and promotes early blow-off, whereas further injection in the range of 5–10% significantly enhances flame stabilization and extends the blow-off limit. Beyond this range, however, additional central air again deteriorates flame stability, leading to blow-off. To understand the underlying mechanisms, computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to analyze flame–flow interactions and recirculation characteristics near the bluff body. The observed behavior was interpreted using a Damköhler number derived from the practical reaction zone, which captures the balance between chemical and flow time scales that control flame stability. The variation of the Damköhler number closely follows the experimentally measured blow-off trend and explains the three distinct regimes through changes in local equivalence ratio, temperature, residence time, and flame volume induced by central air injection. The results indicate that central air injection creates both stabilizing and destabilizing effects, depending on the interaction with the flame anchoring region. These findings confirm that flame–flow coupling plays a dominant role in blow-off behavior and that there is an ideal central air flow rate for keeping flames stable. The current study offers physical understanding and design-oriented recommendations for enhancing central air injection techniques in hydrogen-enriched, low-emission gas turbine combustors. The present study provides physical insight and design-relevant guidance for optimizing central air injection strategies in hydrogen-enriched, low-emission gas-turbine combustors.
