As health technologies become more advanced and increasingly embedded in everyday life, firms have adopted various strategies to encourage consumers to engage in health behaviors through these tools. Anthropomorphism is commonly employed as one such strategy. In health contexts, prior research has shown that anthropomorphizing threats, diseases, or bodily elements tends to promote preventive and restorative behaviors. In contrast, means anthropomorphism, which involves attributing human-like qualities to health care products or devices, has shown far more inconsistent patterns. This dissertation addresses this gap by demonstrating that the effectiveness of anthropomorphism in health devices depends not on anthropomorphism itself but on the particular form it takes. Drawing on Mind Perception Theory, two types of means anthropomorphism are conceptualized: companion-framed and supervisor-framed devices. A companion-framed device conveys emotional attentiveness and presence, reflecting a high level on the experience dimension of mind perception, whereas a supervisor-framed device communicates structure and direction, reflecting a high level on the agency dimension.
When implemented in health contexts, these two forms are not equally effective, and their effectiveness depends on their alignment with users’ appraisals of influence over their health goals. To examine these conditions, this dissertation considers the nature of health goals and how people cope with the stress involved in pursuing them. Specifically, the concept of perceived goal leverage is introduced, defined as individuals’ beliefs about how much their actions can meaningfully influence progress in a health goal. This appraisal shapes whether individuals seek emotionally supportive involvement from a health device or view such support as less necessary. Accordingly, companion framing is expected to be particularly beneficial when individuals perceive limited influence over their health progress, whereas role-based differences diminish when such support is less needed.
These predictions were examined across four empirical studies. Study 1 first validated the conceptual distinction between companion and supervisor framings by showing that they evoke distinct mind-perception profiles. Studies 2 through 4 then tested whether the effectiveness of anthropomorphic role framing depends on perceived goal leverage in shaping health behavior and whether coping fit serves as the psychological mechanism that explains how this moderated effect emerges. Companion framing led to higher trial intention and coping fit under low perceived leverage, whereas these advantages diminished when leverage was high. Study 4 further demonstrated that this interactive pattern was not attributable to differences in the objective difficulty of participants’ health goals.
Taken together, these findings inform both theoretical understanding and practical application. Means anthropomorphism in health communication should therefore be understood not by its mere presence but by the specific human-like role a device conveys. This dissertation extends Mind Perception Theory to human-technology interaction by showing how agency and experience are embedded in device framing and shape relational responses. It further advances Stress and Coping Theory by introducing perceived goal leverage as a domain-specific appraisal that governs the form of support individuals find appropriate. Practically, the results highlight that companion-type anthropomorphism is most effective when individuals feel they have limited influence over their health progress, whereas role-based differences become negligible when perceived leverage is high. Because leverage perceptions can shift through goal structure or brief communication cues, firms can strategically shape the conditions under which anthropomorphic design is experienced as supportive. Overall, this dissertation offers a coherent framework that differentiates anthropomorphic roles for health devices and explains when and why each role is more effective in motivating users to pursue demanding health goals.
