The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (eCO₂RR), which converts CO₂ into value-added chemicals and fuels, has emerged as a next-generation energy conversion technology essential for achieving a carbon-neutral society. The eCO₂RR is a sustainable process that utilizes electrical energy to convert the greenhouse gas CO₂ into useful products such as carbon monoxide (CO), ethylene (C₂H₄), and ethanol (C₂H₅OH). Alongside hydrogen production, it is regarded as one of the most promising electrochemical routes for carbon resource utilization. However, practical implementation requires the simultaneous achievement of low overpotential, high current density, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability—factors that are governed collectively by the catalyst composition and structure, interfacial reaction characteristics, and mass-transport properties. Therefore, establishing a fundamental understanding of each reaction step and developing systematic design principles for catalysts and electrode systems are critical for realizing efficient CO₂ conversion.
This dissertation focuses on elucidating the fundamental reaction mechanisms of eCO₂RR and establishing design principles for highly efficient catalysts and electrode systems. The interactions among electronic structure, proton transfer, and interfacial reactions that govern catalytic activity and selectivity were investigated from a multiscale perspective. To enhance reaction performance, this study explored (i) electronic structure tuning through alloy configuration and support properties, (ii) electronic density modulation at the active sites of metal cluster catalysts, and (iii) regulation of proton and ion transport at the electrode–electrolyte interface. Through this integrated approach, the intrinsic interfacial limitations of eCO₂RR were addressed, and a mechanistic understanding of intermediate stabilization via catalyst electronic structure and electric double-layer (EDL) control was established. Furthermore, a unified catalyst–electrode–electrolyte design concept was proposed, providing a foundation for scalable CO₂ conversion in membrane–electrode assembly (MEA) systems.
Chapter 1 introduces the background and significance of this research. It highlights the importance of eCO₂RR as a key technology for carbon neutrality, outlines its fundamental mechanisms alongside the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and discusses strategies for improving selectivity through catalyst design and electrolyte optimization. The chapter concludes by summarizing the current challenges and technical bottlenecks of eCO₂RR, providing a rationale for the interfacial and electronic structure engineering approaches presented in subsequent chapters.
Chapter 2 investigates a bimetallic AuAg catalyst designed for industrially relevant eCO₂RR under MEA conditions. Unlike conventional H-type or flow cells, the MEA employs a gas diffusion electrode (GDE), significantly enhancing mass transfer while imposing harsher reaction environments. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the AuAg catalyst containing AgCl domains undergoes atomic rearrangement during reduction, generating oxidized Ag⁺ species and low-coordination surface sites that serve as active centers for CO formation. Incorporation of a porous carbon support mitigated mass-transport limitations, enabling stable CO generation even at high potentials. These results demonstrate that both intrinsic (atomic arrangement, alloy structure) and extrinsic (support, electrode architecture) factors cooperatively determine CO₂ conversion efficiency in MEA systems.
Chapter 3 presents a strategy for electronic structure control through interfacial interactions between metal clusters and organometallic ligands. Using an Ag₉Cu₆–Fc (ferrocene) cluster catalyst, operando ATR-SEIRAS and theoretical calculations revealed that the ferrocene ligand forms an interfacial electronic coupling with the metal cluster, establishing an efficient electron-transfer pathway and stabilizing reaction intermediates. This interaction facilitates electronic communication among metal centers and enhances CO₂ reduction selectivity. These findings experimentally and theoretically validate that electronic density modulation at the metal–ligand interface is a key principle for controlling reaction pathways and guiding catalyst design.
Chapter 4 proposes a new interfacial engineering approach for achieving stable CO₂RR under acidic conditions. Although HER typically dominates in acidic electrolytes, this study experimentally demonstrated that an ionic-liquid-modified Ni–N–C catalyst can utilize hydronium ions (H₃O⁺) as proton donors instead of water. Operando ATR-SEIRAS measurements and DFT calculations revealed that the coexistence of H₃O⁺ and alkali cations (K⁺) stabilizes reaction intermediates at Ni–N₄ active sites and lowers the energy barrier of hydrogenation steps through synergistic effects. By tuning electrolyte pH and cation concentration within the MEA system, high CO selectivity and long-term stability were achieved even under acidic conditions. These results extend the conventional neutral-electrolyte paradigm and demonstrate that precise control over proton transport pathways and interfacial structure can enable efficient CO₂RR in acidic environments.
In conclusion, this dissertation provides an integrated understanding of the coupled interactions among catalysts, electrolytes, electrodes, and reactor systems in eCO₂RR. By tuning electronic structure and interfacial proton–ion transport, it demonstrates that both activity and selectivity can be optimized simultaneously. Beyond improving individual catalyst performance, this work establishes interfacial and system-level design principles applicable to practical CO₂ electrolysis, thereby contributing to the scientific foundation of next-generation, high-efficiency electrochemical carbon conversion technologies.
