This study presents the feasibility and effectiveness of an adaptive pressure control method for water heating in a domestic hot water (DHW)-integrated variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat pump system using a dynamic simulation model.
In conventional DHW heat pump systems, water heating is typically performed using a fixed high-side pressure target, selected conservatively to satisfy worst-case DHW demand. As a result, the refrigeration cycle often operates at an unnecessarily high compression ratio, even when the actual DHW load is low or the storage tank has largely recovered.
In a DHW-integrated VRF system, such issue becomes more critical during simultaneous space conditioning and water heating. The discharge pressure required for DHW production is generally higher than that preferred for space-conditioning operation. Maintaining this elevated pressure leads to excessive heating or cooling capacity on the air side and increases overall compressor work.
As a potential solution, an adaptive pressure control strategy is proposed in which the target high-side pressure is adjusted based on the thermal state of the DHW storage tank. A one-dimensional dynamic model of the VRF cycle is developed, including a discharge-gas plate heat exchanger and a stratified storage-type DHW tank. Simultaneous space conditioning and DHW supply are simulated under a realistic high-usage draw pattern.
The low-layer tank temperature is used as an indicator of DHW availability. Intermittent draw events first disturb the lower region of a stratified tank as cold make-up water enters near the bottom. For this reason, the low-layer temperature provides a direct and sensitive measure of tank depletion and recovery. The target discharge pressure is regulated accordingly.
System behavior under the proposed control was evaluated against conventional fixed high-pressure operation across a range of load conditions. Across both space heating- and cooling-DHW operating modes, the adaptive pressure strategy consistently lowered total system work, while delivering water-heating performance and overall coefficient of performance comparable to the control case. These findings indicate that treating discharge pressure as a state-dependent variable is an efficient approach for improving the energy efficiency of DHW-integrated VRF heat pump systems.
