This dissertation aims to conduct a contrastive study of the aspectual systems of Korean and Hindi from a typological perspective. Aspect is a core grammatical category that expresses how an event or situation unfolds over time and, together with tense, plays a crucial role in interpreting event structure. Korean and Hindi despite belonging to distinct language families, both exhibit complex aspectual systems. This study examines how aspectual markers function in each language and investigates the grammaticalization processes that shaped their current systems.
As the theoretical framework for analysis, this study employed Comrie (1976)’s binary opposition between perfective and imperfective aspect, Vendler (1967)’s verb classification theory, Bybee et al. (1994)’s theory of aspectual grammaticalization, Hopper (1991)’s principles of grammaticalization, and Lehmann (2002)’s parameters of grammaticalization. The study is based on a combination of data sources, including literature, naturally occurring examples, corpus data, and constructed contrastive examples based on native speaker intuition. Aspectual readings are analyzed with respect to several factors, including syntactic structure, verb type, and semantic-pragmatic features.
In the case of Korean, the primary focus is on the markers -ess-, -ko iss-, and –e iss-. Among these, -ko iss- receives special attention for its semantic ambiguity, as it allows both progressive and resultative interpretations. This study argues that such ambiguity is not due to lexical properties but rather to differences in syntactic structure, specifically whether the clause is monoclausal or biclausal, and that resultative readings emerge only under specific pragmatic conditions. -ess- is treated not as an aspectual marker but as a tense marker, as its classification as aspect is incompatible with morphological, syntactic and semantic consistency. Diachronically, -ess- originated from the resultative construction -e is(i)- and, through morphological reduction and syntactic reanalysis, came to function as an independent past tense marker. This change shows a close correlation with the restructuring process of the Korean aspectual system.
In contrast, Hindi employs rah-, -t-, and -y- as independent aspectual markers representing the progressive, habitual, and perfective aspects, respectively, with clearly distinguished functions. Notably, the progressive morpheme rah- has traditionally been described as an auxiliary verb in previous grammatical studies; however, this study treats it as an independent element that has been grammaticalized into an affix. It also demonstrates that -y- functions as the primary marker of perfective aspect, whereas -ā merely reflects gender-number agreement.
Both Modern Korean and Hindi exhibit a binary opposition between perfective and imperfective aspects, a fundamental distinction widely attested in many of the world’s languages. With respect to perfective constructions (-e iss- in Korean and –y- h- in Hindi), the two languages typologically share a resultative interpretation. However, the Hindi perfective construction differs from Korean in that it encompasses not only resultative readings but also interpretations of recently completed events and experiential meanings. In Korean, imperfective constructions derived with -ko iss- express ongoing processes through derived interpretations, and depending on the context, they may also convey iterative or habitual meanings. In contrast, within the imperfective domain of Hindi, an independent progressive construction (rah- h-) and a habitual construction (-t- h-) are clearly distinguished. In this respect, Korean differs from Hindi in that it lacks an independent habitual aspect marker.
Diachronically, in both languages the progressive marker became differentiated from the imperfective, and both Korean and Hindi share the similarity that this development involved grammaticalization based on a stative verb: the existential verb issta ‘to exist/be located’ in Korean and the residual verb rahnā ‘to remain/stay’ in Hindi. However, while Korean -ko iss- permits semantic ambiguity within a single form, Hindi shows a strict one-to-one correspondence between form and meaning. The grammaticalization of the Korean past marker -eoss- originates in the resultative aspect, proceeds through the perfect aspect, and ultimately develops into a past-tense marker, following a typological pathway attested across many languages. The study further demonstrates that aspectual interpretation is not determined solely by morphological markers but results from the complex interaction of multiple factors, including verb class, syntactic-semantic features, and pragmatic context, thereby confirming the non-linear nature of aspectual realization.
Through this analysis, the dissertation offers empirical evidence for the coexistence of typological universality and language-specific variation in aspectual systems. It shows that aspect is not merely a functional category opposed to tense, but one intricately connected to the broader event structure of a clause. Lastly, by assessing both the applicability and limitations of existing aspect typology, this research also aims to contribute to future theoretical refinement and cross-linguistic generalization of aspectual theory.
