The purpose of this study is to re-examine the inherent “ambiguity” that arises when the definition of “continuity of a function” in school mathematics undergoes didactic transposition from academic mathematics as a productive educational resource for students at schools for the gifted in science. Furthermore, it aims to analyze the process of students’ epistemological changes and knowledge reconstruction by developing and applying a discussion-based instruction model utilizing this ambiguity. Here, “ambiguity” refers to the concept presented by Byers (2007), which means “perceiving a single situation or idea through two or more frames of reference that are mutually incompatible but internally consistent.”
For this purpose, four design principles were derived: “design of cognitive conflict”, “critical reconstruction of concepts”, “the teacher’s role as a facilitator”, and “utilization of the cognitive characteristics of gifted students” based on theoretical foundations such as Grosholz’s (2007) theory of productive ambiguity, Alkandari’s (2025) Conceptual Definition Model (CDM), social constructivism, and Lakatos’s (1991) logic of “conjectures and refutations.” The developed instruction model consists of four stages of core questions and adopts Seo’s (2005) social constructivist instruction model, which follows a four-phase process: “subjective knowledge formation → objectification (public criticism and re-formation) → objective knowledge formation → personal re-formation.” The discussion-based instruction model was designed according to the ADDIE model, a method of instructional design. After conducting a 100-minute discussion class and stimulated recall interviews with 15 students at a school for the gifted in science, the collected data were analyzed using the constant comparative method.
The analysis results showed that students demonstrated meta-cognitive thinking and critical analysis skills through the recognition of ambiguity and the resulting cognitive conflict. Through social interaction, they refined their subjective knowledge into objective knowledge with mathematical consistency. In this process, they realized that the essence of mathematical knowledge is a flexible and adaptable “promise” rather than an absolute truth.
Based on these analysis results, the following conclusions were drawn:
First, the discussion-based instruction model utilizing ambiguity presented in this study is an effective pedagogical device that enhances gifted students' intellectual curiosity and task commitment. Students showed high levels of immersion in the process of resolving gaps in definitions rather than merely seeking correct answers, and ambiguity serves as a “productive resource” that stimulates divergent thinking. In this context, the teacher must fulfill the role of a “facilitator” who triggers discourse rather than a mere transmitter of knowledge.
Second, social interaction through discussion functions as an effective social scaffold that transitions gifted students’ subjective intuition into objective mathematical knowledge. Through verbalization within small groups and mutual criticism during whole-class discussions, students objectify knowledge and reconstruct definitions. In this process, they develop academic flexibility and bond as a collaborative inquiry community. The two-stage “objectification” structure, moving from small groups to whole-class discussions, serves as a systematic scaffold for transitioning subjective intuition into objective knowledge.
Third, the pedagogical intervention of having students critically confront the didactic transposition process of textbook definitions contributes to the formation of mature epistemological beliefs. By exploring the incompleteness of knowledge and the reasons for the choice of definitions, they come to perceive mathematics as a living discipline, leading to a fundamental change in their attitude toward the subject, moving away from result-oriented thinking.
In conclusion, this study suggests that ambiguity in school mathematics is not an error to be eliminated but rather a creative pedagogical device that awakens higher-order thinking and mathematical agency in gifted education. The discussion-based instruction model utilizing ambiguity proposed in this study helped form a critical eye for perceiving the mathematical essence and contributed to endowing students with a mathematical identity as “designers of knowledge”.
