Previous studies on connections in precast concrete (PC) structures have mainly focused on the structural behavior of unidirectional connections. However, precast bridge decks require simultaneous connections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions, and precast wall elements also exhibit complex behavior associated with bidirectional connections combining horizontal and vertical joints. When conventional connection details are applied to PC members with such bidirectional connections, constructability is often reduced due to reinforcement interference during fabrication and assembly. To address this issue, this study proposes a rotational connector incorporating bow-tie and loop rebar details and evaluates its structural performance.
This study investigates the structural behavior of the proposed rotational connector for application to precast concrete members used in deep circular tunnel vertical shafts through experimental testing and nonlinear finite element analysis. To simulate the behavior of structural components comprising the tunnel shaft, scaled specimens were fabricated and classified into curved members, straight members, and direct shear members. Especially, the curved members forming the outer wall of the vertical shaft are structural elements that simultaneously resist axial force and bending moment, and therefore exhibit connection behavior different from that of conventional flexural members. For each specimen, load–deflection relationships, crack initiation and propagation characteristics, and reinforcement strain distributions were measured to analyze the structural behavior according to different connection details.
The experimental results showed that members incorporating loop rebar details with a concrete core exhibited the highest flexural resistance, followed by those with bow-tie details. For curved members, the maximum strength of PC specimens with loop rebar details reached approximately 92% of that of cast-in-place (CIP) specimens and about 174% of the nominal flexural strength of the section. In curved members, the differences in maximum strength among the connection details were relatively small. In contrast, for straight members, which exhibited flexure-dominated behavior, the differences in maximum strength between bow-tie and loop rebar details were clearly distinguished.
Nonlinear finite element analysis conducted using Midas FEA indicated that the analytical results for straight members ranged from approximately 87% to 122% of the experimental values, showing reasonably good consistency. In contrast, for curved members, the analytical results tended to overestimate the experimental values, ranging from approximately 130% to 143%. This discrepancy is attributed to the influence of complex boundary conditions associated with the behavior of pin structures used to simulate jig deformation and rotational conditions in the experiments, whereas such effects were idealized in the numerical analysis.
Overall, the proposed rotational connector demonstrated that various bow-tie and loop rebar connection details can be effectively applied to curved members subjected to combined axial force and flexural moment. For straight members, a more limited application is recommended, in which the nominal strength is secured by increasing the diameter of the loop reinforcement.
