Ship stability is a fundamental safety requirement for all types of ships. However, despite compliance with existing intact stability criteria, accidents related to dynamic stability in waves have continued to be reported, highlighting the limitations of conventional stability assessment frameworks. In response, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), through the Interim Guidelines (2020), defined five stability failure modes—pure loss of stability, parametric roll, surf-riding and broaching, excessive acceleration, and dead ship condition—and introduced the Second-Generation Intact Stability Criteria (SGISC) with a stepwise stability assessment framework.
The objective of this study is to perform Direct Stability Assessment (DSA) for a series of container ships based on the IMO second generation intact stability guidelines and to analyze the characteristics of stability assessment results for the excessive acceleration failure mode and the dead ship condition. To this end, a DSA numerical analysis model was employed to conduct deterministic and probabilistic assessments under design situations for the excessive acceleration failure mode, considering both a single container ship and a series of container ships. The vulnerability assessment results and computational efficiency of each assessment method were compared and analyzed. In addition, the influence of wind loads on stability responses under the dead ship condition was investigated, and the trends of stability assessment results with respect to variations in ship size and loading conditions were systematically examined.
The numerical analysis model was validated through comparison with model test results. The results for the single container ship indicate that deterministic assessment generally provides more conservative stability evaluations than probabilistic assessment. In contrast, probabilistic assessment exhibited approximately 2.7 times higher computational efficiency compared to deterministic assessment. A comparison between the excessive acceleration failure mode and the dead ship condition revealed that, when wind loads are considered, the mean value of the maximum roll response increases, leading to a more vulnerable stability evaluation under the dead ship condition.
Through comparative analysis of assessment results and methodologies for the excessive acceleration failure mode and the dead ship condition, this study summarizes key characteristics that should be considered in container ship stability assessment. The findings are expected to serve as useful reference material for the application and interpretation of the IMO second generation intact stability criteria for container ships.
