This study examines the effect of subjective social mobility on the transition to first marriage among unmarried young adults in Korea, using data from the 8th to 26th waves (2005 to 2023) of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). In addition, a gender comparative analysis was conducted to explore whether the relationship between subjective social mobility and marriage transition differs between women and men. Kaplan–Meier estimation and discrete time survival analysis were employed, and average marginal effects were calculated to facilitate interpretation of the results.
The main findings are as follows. First, an increase in subjective social mobility from a low to a high level was associated with a statistically significant increase in the likelihood of marriage transition. In contrast, the difference between the low and middle levels was not statistically significant, suggesting the presence of a threshold effect. This indicates that subjective social mobility influences marriage transition only after reaching a certain level, rather than exerting a linear effect.
Second, the gender comparative analysis revealed distinct patterns for women and men. Among women, the increase in the likelihood of marriage transition from low to middle and from low to high levels of subjective social mobility did not differ substantially and was not statistically significant. By contrast, among men, the increase in the hazard of marriage transition was markedly greater at the high level than at the middle level, compared to the low level. This finding suggests that for men, subjective social mobility affects marriage transition only after reaching a relatively high level, reflecting a clear threshold effect. In other words, while women’s marriage transitions appear to be weakly related to subjective social mobility or influenced mainly by moving out of the low category, men are more likely to enter marriage when they perceive their upward mobility to be sufficiently high. This pattern reflects stronger normative expectations placed on men in relation to economic stability and marriage.
Overall, the results confirm that subjective social mobility is significantly associated with marriage transition among young adults in Korea, and that this relationship varies by gender.
This study offers several important implications. First, it provides empirical evidence that young people’s perceptions of their future social mobility play a meaningful role in major life events such as marriage. This extends previous research that has focused primarily on current economic status by highlighting the importance of expectations about future socioeconomic stability.
Second, the finding that subjective social mobility affects marriage transition suggests that traditional norms emphasizing economic foundations for marriage may still persist. Even after controlling for current economic status, future economic expectations remain significant, indicating that the traditional “marriage bar” may be maintained or even reinforced in contemporary Korean society.
Third, this study identifies clear gender differences in the relationship between subjective social mobility and marriage transition. While women are affected mainly by moving beyond low levels of perceived mobility, men are strongly influenced only at high levels. This supports previous findings that marriage motivations and normative expectations differ by gender.
Fourth, the results have important policy implications for youth and marriage related policies. They suggest that policies centered solely on short term financial incentives may have limited effects on young people who find it difficult to envision a stable future. Addressing structural insecurity and widespread pessimism about future prospects may be more effective in improving young adults’ life conditions.
This study also has several limitations. First, due to data and measurement constraints, the generalizability of the findings is limited. Subjective social mobility has been measured in KLIPS only since 2005, restricting analysis of earlier cohorts and those born after the 1990s. In addition, the single item measure may not fully capture individuals’ perceptions and expectations. Potential bias due to panel attrition cannot be ruled out.
Second, this study could not fully account for value orientations and attitudes that may influence marriage transitions. Key variables such as gender role attitudes and family values were not available in longitudinal form and therefore could not be included, limiting a more comprehensive explanation of the relationship.
Third, the study was conducted in a context where established theories and analytical frameworks linking subjective social mobility and marriage transition remain underdeveloped. Although the research design was informed by multiple theoretical perspectives, the theoretical connections may appear fragmented, and some aspects of variable construction and analytical design relied on the researcher’s judgment.
