Game-player agency refers to a learner’s willingness and ability to make decisions related to game elements within a game-based learning environment. It is distinguished from student agency in that game-player agency is more closely tied to game mechanics than to the learning process itself. This study investigates: (1) the relationship between game-player agency and student agency, (2) the relationship between the two types of agency and learning gain, (3) the relationship between the two types of agency and engagement, and (4) the indirect effect of engagement on the relationship between agency and learning gain. To examine these relationships, we analyzed gameplay log data from 2,302 students who used the English language learning game LingoCity over a five-month period. Analyses were conducted separately for three age groups (early elementary, later elementary, and middle school).
The results showed that (1) when examining the relationship between game-player agency and student agency, increases in game-player agency were associated with increases in student agency across all age groups, although the rate of increase gradually diminished. Time-series analyses further indicated that the influence between the two agency types consistently remained positive across all age groups, with the later elementary group displaying a significant strengthening of this effect over time. (2) Regarding the relationship between agency and learning gain, the middle school group demonstrated that learning gain was positively influenced by student agency (p=0.003), whereas game-player agency showed a negative influence on learning gain (p<0.001). No significant direct effects were observed for the elementary groups. (3) In terms of engagement, both forms of agency were found to have positive effects on engagement. (4) Mediation analyses revealed that learning participation frequency exerted a significant indirect effect on the pathway from both types of agency to learning gain across all age groups.
These findings underscore the importance of game-player agency, demonstrating that it positively contributes not only to student agency but also to engagement and learning gain.
