The purpose of this study is to examine how secondary physical education teachers implement Expression Domain instruction, the factors influencing their practices, and their patterns of continuing professional development (CPD). Based on these findings, the study aims to propose directions for CPD to bridge the gap between curriculum and practice. The research questions guiding this study are as follows: 1) How do secondary physical education teachers implement Expression Domain instruction? 2) What factors influence their implementation of Expression Domain instruction? 3) How do secondary physical education teachers develop their expertise in teaching the Expression Domain? 4) What directions should CPD take to enhance secondary physical education teachers’ Expression Domain teaching professionalism?
This study adopted a qualitative case study based on a social constructivist paradigm and was conducted over a 17-month period from August 2024 to December 2025. Data were collected through online open questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and local documents. Participants were selected using purposeful sampling (Patton, 2008), consisting of 110 general physical education teachers who completed the preliminary open-ended survey and 20 key physical education teachers who participated in in-depth interviews. All collected data were inductively analyzed through various coding processes (Creswell & Poth, 2016). To ensure trustworthiness in qualitative research, triangulation, member checking, and peer debriefing were used. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of SNU to ensure ethically valid procedures.
The findings from the above process are as follows: First, the implementation of Expression Domain instruction were examined in terms of objectives, contents, and methods. 1) With regard to objectives, teachers pursued curriculum-aligned objectives—such as self-expression, communication, and the cultivation of aesthetic values—alongside practical objectives, including dispelling prejudice, promoting enjoyment, experiencing the novelty of non-competitive activities, and fostering a sense of unity. 2) Regarding contents, three approaches emerged: transformation-centered, integration-centered, and challenge-centered. 3) Concerning methods, three teaching approaches were employed: direct instruction, indirect instruction, and student-led instruction.
Second, factors influencing physical education teachers’ implementation of Expression Domain instruction were examined from a socio-ecological perspective. 1) At the intrapersonal level, facilitating factors included positive dispositions such as teachers’ confidence, open-mindedness, and willingness to embrace challenges, as well as pre-service teacher education, ongoing professional learning, teaching experience, and positive emotions such as inspiration and enhanced self-esteem. In contrast, hindering factors included gender stereotypes, a skill-centered bias, doubts about instructional expertise, the burden of subjective assessment, and the perceived impracticality of instructional resources, such as textbooks that were rarely used. 2) Interpersonal factors: students’ positive responses and student peer interactions, as well as colleague teachers’ support served as facilitating factors, while students’ resistance and colleagues’ non-cooperation were hindering factors. 3) At the policy and institutional levels, facilitating factors included teachers’ recognition of the importance of curriculum enactment and its integration into broader school culture. In contrast, hindering factors included perceived ineffectiveness in curriculum implementation, constraints related to space and facilities, and insufficient pre-service and in-service teacher education.
Third, features of physical education teachers’ CPD related to Expression Domain instruction were examined in the aspects of format, characteristics, and effects. 1) CPD formats were classified into three types: formal professional development, non-formal professional development, and informal professional development. Meanwhile, some teachers did not participate in professional development due to lack of structural opportunities, life-cycle transitions, and sociocultural barriers. 2) CPD characteristics were further categorized according to participation motivation—namely institutional obligation, immediate necessity, voluntary passion, and professional growth—and participation modes, which included expert-guided, observational learning, collaborative learning, self-directed, and action research. 3) CPD effects: strong effects were manifested through professional enhancement via application to actual instruction and growth through communication and collaboration with fellow physical education teachers. However, limited effects were observed in terms of awareness of the Expression Domain or class expansion.
Fourth, directions for CPD were explored across three levels: the teacher level, the curriculum level, and the effective CPD level. 1) At the teacher level, CPD should focus on transforming internal barriers and negative perceptions of the Expression Domain in order to build teachers’ confidence, while also providing opportunities for trial and error and fostering practical instructional competencies that can be applied immediately in practice. 2) At the curriculum level, directions involve supporting differentiated learning pathways that guide teachers from a transformation-centered entry stage, through an integration-centered development stage, to a challenge-centered deepening stage, thereby enabling learning that aligns with teachers’ developmental levels. 3) At the effective CPD level, directions emphasize the development of a dual formal learning structure that combines short-term intensive learning with long-term in-depth learning. In addition, an integrated and self-sustaining learning environment should be fostered—one that promotes individual learning, collaboration inquiry, opportunities for professional practice, customized support, and long-term sustainability.
Synthesizing the findings, this study highlights four key points. First, secondary physical education teachers’ implementation of Expression Domain instruction demonstrates diversity in terms of objectives, contents, and instructional methods; however, the Expression Domain remains marginalized, and the intentions of the curriculum are not fully realized in practice. Second, factors influencing the implementation of Expression Domain instruction operate in complex ways across intrapersonal, interpersonal, policy and institutional levels, with hindering factors functioning as structural barriers that are difficult to overcome through individual teachers’ efforts alone. Third, although CPD related to Expression Domain instruction is enacted in various forms, it remains insufficient in both quantitative and qualitative terms, particularly due to a lack of in-depth learning driven by voluntary engagement and professional growth. Fourth, CPD aimed at enhancing Expression Domain teaching competence must move beyond individual teacher capacity building to integratively align a phased curricular approach with the development of a coherent and effective CPD system.
Based on the results and discussion of this study, implications for strengthening secondary physical education’s Expression Domain are as follows: First, fundamental restructuring of pre-service physical education teacher education programs is essential. Second, the physical education teacher entrance examination system should be reformed to place greater emphasis on competence in the Expression Domain. Third, the roles of in-service physical education teachers with a background in dance should be institutionally strengthened. With regard to future research, several directions are suggested. First, the conceptual and philosophical foundations of the Expression Domain within the physical education curriculum should be more rigorously articulated and reexamined. Second, longitudinal studies are needed to track the long-term effects of CPD related to the Expression Domain among physical education teachers. Third, further research should explore students’ experiences of Expression Domain instruction and its learning outcomes from the learners’ perspectives.
