The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effects of work hope and employment preparation behavior in the relationship between career support of university and perceived employability as recognized by junior college students. To achieve this purpose, the following specific research objectives were established: first, to examine the direct effects among career support of university, work hope, employment preparation behavior, and perceived employability; and second, to verify the mediating effects of work hope and employment preparation behavior on the relationship between career support of university and perceived employability. Based on a review of prior studies, a research model was developed, and the hypotheses were formulated as follows: (1) there are positive direct relationships among career support of university, work hope, employment preparation behavior, and perceived employability; and (2) work hope and employment preparation behavior will positively mediate the relationship between career support of university and perceived employability.
The population of this study consisted of students enrolled for at least two semesters in two- or three-year junior colleges. In this study, perceived employability—the dependent variable—was defined as “the extent to which junior college students believe that they can be employed based on their abilities and environmental support.” Considering that students in education and medical-related majors generally perceive higher employability due to their clear career paths, they were excluded from the population to ensure sample homogeneity. Consequently, the study focused on students majoring in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. The final population appropriate for this study comprised 451,587 enrolled students across 131 junior colleges nationwide. For regression analysis, the minimum sample size required for statistical validity was set at 380, while the target sample size was determined as 450, taking into account response rate, potential outliers, and incomplete responses. Data collection was conducted using stratified sampling.
The research instrument was a questionnaire composed of 85 items covering perceived employability, career support of university, work hope, employment preparation behavior, and demographic characteristics. All items except demographic questions were measured on a five-point Likert scale, and all variables were assessed using instruments previously validated for reliability and validity in preceding studies. The questionnaire was reviewed for content validity by three experts in vocational education and for face validity by three junior college students. Based on this review, several items were revised to better reflect the context of junior college students while preserving the intent of the original instruments.
Data were collected through the online survey platform SMORE, including a pilot survey (August 25–September 1, 2025) and the main survey (September 8–October 10, 2025). The researcher explained the purpose of the study to institutional collaborators and distributed the survey URL according to each department’s expected number of respondents. To improve response rates, respondents who completed all questions conscientiously were given a small incentive. A total of 476 responses were collected; after removing 23 statistical outliers, 453 valid responses were used for analysis.
Data were analyzed using R 4.3.3 following several steps. First, descriptive statistics—including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, skewness, and kurtosis—were computed for respondents’ general characteristics and study variables. Second, reliability and potential common method bias were tested. Third, Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated, and tolerance and variance inflation factor (VIF) values were examined to assess multicollinearity. Fourth, independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA were conducted to identify demographic variables that could influence the dependent variable. Finally, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to examine the direct effects between the measured variables, and Hayes' (2022) PROCESS Macro Model 6 was applied to verify all mediating effects among the research variables. The statistical significance level was set at .05, and mediating effects were deemed significant when the bootstrap confidence interval did not include zero.
The main results according to the research objectives are as follows. First, there were statistically significant positive direct relationships among career support of university, work hope, employment preparation behavior, and perceived employability. Second, work hope and employment preparation behavior were found to have positive mediating effects on the relationship between career support of university and perceived employability.
The conclusions drawn from these findings are as follows. First, career support of university, work hope, employment preparation behavior, and perceived employability are positively and significantly related. This suggests that when universities provide students with career counseling, information, emotional support, and problem-solving assistance, such efforts can enhance students’ perceived employability. Moreover, when junior college students set occupational goals and develop concrete plans to achieve them, they are more likely to strengthen their confidence in their employability and capabilities. Additionally, the more students engage in job-seeking behaviors—such as gathering employment information and developing competencies—the greater the improvement in their perceived employability. Furthermore, emotional support beyond informational and placement-oriented services helps activate students’ occupational motivation, and such positive psychological mechanisms promote concrete employment behaviors. Finally, environmental support from universities serves as a crucial factor that encourages students to take active steps toward employment.
Second, the career support provided by universities, as perceived by community college students, was found to have a significant impact on employability through a lingering indirect path mediated by work hope. This result can be understood through the perspectives of the Social Cognitive Career Theory of Lent and Brown (2013), the Hope Theory of Snyder et al. (2002), and employability development theories. Generally, community college students face psychological pressure or career barriers due to competition with four-year university students and negative social perceptions during their job search. In this context, university career support offers information, emotional encouragement, and practical assistance, thereby positively influencing work hope, which is defined as the disposition to persistently pursue career goals. Furthermore, programs provided by educational institutions improve individual competencies, which in turn enhance psychological factors like self-reflection and self-belief, ultimately increasing community college students' confidence in real-world employment situations.
Third, the career support perceived by community college students was shown to significantly influence employability through an indirect pathway mediated by job-seeking behavior. This can be understood in relation to the specific context of community colleges, where students need to secure employment within a limited period of two to three years. For experiences gained through curricular and extracurricular activities during a short academic term to translate into actual employment, employability must be enhanced by actively demonstrating these skills through tangible actions. Therefore, career support at community colleges should be designed so that students' academic achievements and experiences do not remain as implicit knowledge but instead lead to practical job-seeking behaviors.
Fourth, the career support perceived by community college students was found to significantly influence employability by sequentially mediating work hope and job-seeking behavior. In other words, career support in community colleges not only increases employability directly but also enhances it by inspiring students' work hope and encouraging job-seeking activities. To put it differently, students with higher levels of work hope are more likely to actively pursue job opportunities, and this process ultimately improves their employability. Notably, the fact that the indirect effect through work hope and job-seeking behavior is greater than the direct effect of university career support on employability has important implications. This indicates that while support programs directly help community college students enter the labor market, activating psychological factors and translating them into specific actions are central to boosting employability.
Based on the research results and conclusions, the following practical implications are proposed. First, junior colleges should enhance industry–academia cooperation-based practical career experiences to help students gain realistic work experience, verify their employability, and refine their career goals. Second, career support of university should be strengthened as a structural support system that simultaneously fosters students’ psychological motivation and practical actions through integrated management of career counseling, employment support, and extracurricular programs. Suggestions for future research are as follows. First, future studies should examine whether students’ perceived employability leads to actual employment outcomes or career success. Second, research on junior college students’ perceived employability should consider both subjective and objective labor market demands to better understand its multidimensional nature.
