This study aimed to experimentally examine the effects of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)–based acceptance writing intervention on fear of negative evaluation, internalized shame, and unconditional self-acceptance among individuals with high narcissistic vulnerability. Narcissistic vulnerability is characterized by emotional fragility such as heightened evaluation sensitivity, shame, and self-criticism; however, empirical research directly examining the effectiveness of counseling interventions for this population remains limited. Accordingly, this study sought to empirically explore the feasibility of counseling interventions for narcissistic vulnerability by comparing the effects of an ACT-based acceptance writing intervention with those of a distraction writing intervention.
A total of 40 undergraduate students with high levels of narcissistic vulnerability were identified through a screening survey, and data from 36 participants were included in the final analyses (acceptance writing group: n= 18; distraction writing group: n= 18). Participants were randomly assigned to one of the two intervention groups. To examine the immediate effects of a single-session intervention, changes following repeated interventions, and the maintenance of intervention effects, outcome variables were assessed at four time points: pre-intervention (T1), post-single-session intervention (T2), post-repeated intervention (T3), and follow-up (T4). The dependent variables were fear of negative evaluation, internalized shame, and unconditional self-acceptance. Mixed-design analyses of variance (Mixed ANOVA) were conducted to test main effects of time and group x time interaction effects.
The results indicated that fear of negative evaluation showed significant main effects of time as well as group x time interaction effects, indicating a decrease over time in both groups with differerent patterns of change. Internalized shame exhibited a significant main effect of time but no significant group x time interaction effect, suggesting similar patterns of decrease across the two groups. For unconditional self-acceptance, both the main effect of time and the group x time interaction effect were significant, indicating increases over time in both groups with distinct patterns of change.
These findings suggest that acceptance writing leads to more sustained changes in core variables such as evaluative sensitivity and self-acceptance, while distraction writing is also effective in temporarily alleviating emotional distress. The results further imply that, for individuals with high narcissistic vulnerability, acceptance and distraction strategies should be understood not as mutually exclusive, but as complementary intervention approaches.
This study employed a longitudinal design incorporating repeated interventions and follow-up assessments, enabling the examination of time-specific changes. In addition, it provides empirical evidence supporting vulnerable narcissism as a modifiable psychological process. However, the use of a Covert Narcissism Scale to identify individuals with high narcissistic vulnerability constitutes a limitation. Future research should focus on the development and validation of a Narcissistic Vulnerability Scale in Korea and examine integrative ACT-based interventions for this population.
