This study examines how anti-China sentiment that has intensified in South Korea since 2021 has been discursively constructed and disseminated through conservative media. Focusing on Chosun Daily, the country’s most influential conservative daily newspaper, it analyzes how China is represented not merely as a diplomatic actor or strategic competitor but as a “suspicious neighbor” and a “threatening Other.” The study argues that anti-China discourse functions not simply as information delivery but as a mechanism for emotional mobilization and the construction of antagonistic collective identities.
The analysis shows that this discourse operates through a dual structure: China is framed as an external enemy, while domestic political actors and social groups are simultaneously labeled as “pro-China” or internal enemies. By mobilizing emotions such as fear, anger, and betrayal, this framing fixes China as a political “signifier of danger” and reorganizes political anxiety into a new axis of enmity.
The study further demonstrates that this pattern is closely linked to populist and fascistic modes of political communication that politicize affect and consolidate support through polarization. It concludes that anti-China discourse should be understood not merely as a reaction toward a foreign country but as a symptom of internal political anxiety and democratic strain in South Korea.
