With the advancement of medical technology, the incidence of Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries (MDRPIs) has been gradually increasing. Nurses play an important role throughout the entire process of preventing, identifying and providing care for patients with MDRPIs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitude and prevention performance status of intensive care unit (ICU) nurses regarding MDRPIs, and to identify the factors influencing the prevention performance of MDRPIs.
This study was a descriptive research study which took place from August 13th to August 31st, 2025. A total of 127 ICU nurses from S University Hospital with at least 6 months of ICU nursing experience were recruited, and self-reported questionnaires were used to collect data. Knowledge of MDRPI was measured by the Medical Device-Related Pressure Injury Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire developed by Dalli & Girgin (2022) with the exception of one item on neonates. The tool was translated from English into Korean using the World Health Organization’s translation protocol and content validity was verified through expert review, followed by a pilot study. Attitude toward MDRPIs was measured using a tool originally developed for pressure injuries by Moore & Price (2004), translated by Seo (2010), and later modified by Park et al. (2013). This tool was modified to measure attitude toward MDRPI, and content validity was verified through expert review. Prevention performance of MDRPI was measured by Prevention Performance–Medical Device-Related Pressure Ulcer developed by Kim & Lee (2019). The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The average score of MDRPI knowledge was 20.18±1.32 out of 22, attitude towards MDRPI was 41.47±3.53 out of 50, and prevention performance of MDRPI was 61.91±5.64 out of 68. MDRPI knowledge and attitude towards MDRPI showed no statistically significant differences according to general characteristics. On the other hand, prevention performance of MDRPI showed significant differences. Specifically, preventive performance was significantly higher among nurses aged 36 years or older compared to nurses aged 25 years or younger, among nurses with a master’s degree compared to nurses with a bachelor’s degree, among advanced practice nurses compared to staff nurses, among those who provided MDRPI related care 5–9 times a month compared to those who had never provided MDRPI related care, and among those who had received education on MDRPI compared to those who had not. MDRPI knowledge and attitude towards MDRPI showed positive correlation (r=.249, p=.005), and MDRPI knowledge (r=.183, p=.040) and attitude towards MDRPI (r=.333, p<.001) both showed positive correlation with prevention performance of MDRPI. Attitude towards MDRPI (β=.518, p<.001), working experience as an ICU nurse (β=.030, p=.017), and MDRPI education (β=2.185, p=.023) were confirmed as factors influencing prevention performance of MDRPI by stepwise multiple regression analysis, and the explanatory power of the regression model was 20.2% (F=10.302, p<.001).
Although this study was limited to ICU nurses from a single hospital and was conducted using a tool with insufficient reliability, it is meaningful that the study assessed the overall knowledge, attitude and prevention performance levels regarding MDRPI of Korean ICU nurses, and identified factors influencing the prevention performance of MDRPI. Based on these findings, it is suggested that education programs on MDRPIs should be developed and conducted regularly in order to enhance participation of nurses.
