우연으로의 필연 = The Intentional Coincidence

국문 초록 (Abstract)

문득 우연을 체감하게 되는 순간이 있다. 그런 순간은 필연의 연속으로 나타나는지, 특별한 인과 관계 없이 일어나는지 알 수 없다. 그러나 우연에 닿기까지 어떤 수많은 필연의 운명적 사건들이 존재하고 지나갔을지 상상하게 한다. 예상치 못한 결과를 받아들이고 인정하는 태도로서, 연구자는 재료에 대한 이해와 함께 불가항력의 자연적 힘을 수용하고 통제 가능한 범위에서의 필연적 의지를 통해 우연을 드러내고자 한다.
미술, 사진, 문학에 담겨있는 필연성과 우연성에 대해 탐구하였다. 다른 장르 속에 녹아있는 두 개념의 성격과 관계를 살펴보고 연구자의 ‘우연으로의 필연’에 대한 개념을 비교하여 정립하였다.
연구작품 제작을 위해 유약의 유동성, 결정과 핀홀, 단일시유와 이중시유의 표현방법을 연구하였다. 실험을 통해 무광택이면서도 적당한 유동성을 가진 유약의 성질을 연구하고 결정과 핀홀의 생성을 의도하였다. 유동성을 가지기 위해 다양한 융제를 통한 적절한 흐름성을 찾고자 했고, 유약 조성의 변화를 통해 무광택의 표면을 유지하면서도 결정을 생성하는 시험편을 발견하였다. 또한 시유방식에 따라 나타나는 회화적인 풍경을 목격하였다.
이 연구는 ‘우연으로의 필연’이라는 주제 하에 과정 속의 필연적 장치를 구현하고 이것을 소성 과정에 내맡길 때 발생하는 우연의 수용을 다룬다. 흙과 유약은 서로 맞닿아 여러 모습으로, 계산된 우연처럼 나타났다. 작은 변화에도 결과는 뜻밖의 모습을 보였으며, 한편 우연으로 향하는 필연이 충실히 이행되어 예상 범위의 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이 연구는 기술적이고 방법적인 고민의 흔적 속에서 잔잔한 시적 요소가 시각적으로 드러나, 이것이 감상자에게 우연과 필연의 순간이 어떤 모습으로 드러나는지 사유할 기회를 제공한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are instances in which coincidence becomes perceptible. It is unclear whether such moments arise from a sequence of intentions or occur without particular causality. Yet they prompt consideration of how many intentional and fateful events might have unfolded before such coincidences emerged. As a posture of acceptance toward the unexpected, the researcher seeks to reveal coincidence through an understanding of material properties, embracing the uncontrollable forces of nature while maintaining deliberate intent within the bounds of control.

The study investigates the notions of intention and coincidence as they appear in art, photography and literature. By examining the characteristics and relationships of these two concepts across different forms of expression, the research proposes its own conceptual framework of "The Intentional Coincidence".

For the production of the works, the study focuses on the expressive potential of glaze fluidity, crystal formation, the pinhole effect, and the techniques of single and double glazing. Through experimentation, the researcher explored glazes exhibiting a matte surface with adequate fluidity, intentionally inducing crystal and pinhole formation. Various flux compositions were tested to reach adequate flow, producing test pieces that maintained a matte texture while allowing crystalline growth. The experiments also revealed distinctive painterly expressions through different glazing methods.

Under the theme of "The Intentional Coincidence", this research addresses the acceptance of coincidence that arises when intentional structures yield to the transformative uncertainties of firing. Clay and glaze, in constant contact, display diverse appearances resembling calculated coincidences. At times, even minor variations produced unexpected results, while the intended conditions toward coincidence yielded outcomes within predictable bounds. Within these traces of technical and methodological inquiry, the study anticipates a subtle poetic quality in visual form, offering viewers a reflection on how moments of coincidence and intention manifest in perception.
