The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a revised greenhouse
gas (GHG) reduction strategy that mandates the elimination of GHG emissions from
ships by 2050. In response, extensive research on environmentally benign ship
propulsion technologies has emerged, with fuel cells and pure-ammonia fuel engines
being regarded as promising power sources for future electric propulsion vessels.
Large electric propulsion ships demand propulsion power on the order of several tens
of megawatts, and 10-kV-class DC distribution architectures have been investigated
to reduce power-transfer losses. The MVDC power system forms a microgrid
comprising multiple power electronic converters, including diode rectifiers, fuel-cell
converters, and motor drives. Under DC short-circuit faults, the fault current can
reach its peak value within several microseconds, posing a significant risk of thermal
failure to power semiconductor devices. Consequently, microsecond-scale transient
fault current analysis is essential in the design of shipboard DC power systems.
Moreover, due to the disparate dynamic time constants of engines (milliseconds to
minutes) and fuel cells (minutes to hours), long-duration simulations extending over
several hours are required to evaluate power-management strategies.
This thesis develops an accelerated offline simulation model for microsecond-
scale transient analysis of MVDC shipboard power systems and a real-time
simulation model for long-duration operational assessment of onboard generation
units. The offline acceleration model incorporates multiple computational-efficiency
techniques—namely, the simplification of stator–rotor mutual inductance in
synchronous generators, equivalent passive-component modeling of interleaved
LLC converters, and an arm-averaged equivalent representation of modular
multilevel converters (MMCs)—resulting in a computation-time reduction
exceeding 50% relative to the conventional offline model. The real-time simulation
model is constructed on the basis of the accelerated offline framework, with
additional simplification of synchronous generator and fuel-cell converter models
and the utilization of parallelized computation within the real-time simulator, thereby
enabling MVDC system emulation with a 4-µs time step.
The proposed offline and real-time simulation models are employed to analyze critical MVDC system behaviors, including dead-ship start-up sequences, fault-
current characteristics during DC short circuits, and generator operating-mode
transitions under varying load conditions. Furthermore, this thesis presents a sizing
methodology for dynamic braking resistors (DBRs) to dissipate regenerative energy
during crash-stop events and proposes a modeling framework for propulsion-motor
load torque applicable to electric propulsion vessels.
