This thesis examines the early literary works of Ahn Su-gil in relation to the historical changes surrounding the establishment of Manchukuo (滿洲國), focusing on how his fiction exhibits distinct narrative patterns before and after this turning point. In works set prior to the founding of Manchukuo, the realities faced by Koreans living in Manchuria are depicted in a relatively realistic manner amid conditions of political instability. These texts foreground conflicts over land ownership and, in particular, the threat posed by bandits—an issue that has received limited attention in previous studies. Through this analysis, the thesis explores how the anxiety and tension experienced by migrant communities were shaped into narrative form.
In contrast, works set after the establishment of Manchukuo portray in greater detail the ways in which colonial institutions—such as naturalization, household registration, and the formation of collective villages—became deeply embedded in the daily lives of Korean farmers. These narratives illustrate how the imperial administrative order gradually restructured the conditions of communal life, revealing the process by which Korean migrants were incorporated into the colonial governing system. This shift indicates that Ahn Su-gil’s literary concerns entered a different phase from those of his earlier works.
Such narrative changes cannot be fully explained as a simple transformation in the author’s personal creative attitude. Rather, they should be understood as literary responses closely linked to the historical process through which Manchukuo, as a colonial state, established its system of rule and reorganized the social position of Koreans in Manchuria. From this perspective, Ahn Su-gil’s early short and mid-length fiction is particularly significant in that it reflects, with considerable density, the realities he directly witnessed and experienced in Manchuria.
Despite this significance, existing scholarship has largely centered on Ahn Su-gil’s representative novel Bukgando, leaving the literary characteristics and critical concerns of his earlier fiction insufficiently examined. This thesis therefore reconsiders his early short and mid-length works as texts that reveal how the author’s personal experiences were selectively shaped and restructured into narrative form prior to the emergence of his long novels.
Chapter Two focuses on Ahn Su-gil’s early works set in Northeast China before the founding of Manchukuo, a period marked by political turmoil and everyday violence. During this time, Ahn closely engaged with the concrete conditions faced by lower-class Korean migrants in Manchuria. Through an analysis of Jang (場) and The Old Hamji Carrier(함지쟁이 영감), this chapter examines how the author portrays the harsh realities of the lower strata under colonial conditions. Furthermore, works such as Dawn (새벽) and Bukhyangbo (북향보) depict migrants’ efforts to establish a basis for survival and to build communal life amid land disputes and the threat of bandits. While bandits are represented as an external danger to the Korean community, these texts reveal that the more destabilizing forces often lay within the community itself. Through this reading, the chapter demonstrates how bukhyang (northward orientation) functioned not merely as an ideal or hope, but as a concrete strategy and practice for sustaining life under unstable conditions.
Chapter Three examines works set after the establishment of Manchukuo, focusing on the contradictions and fractures in perception experienced by Korean migrants within colonial institutions. Through Wongak Village (원각촌), the chapter analyzes the irrational land systems inherited from the Republican period, as well as issues of naturalization and nationality, highlighting the institutional marginalization of Koreans. It then considers Rice (벼) and Bukhyangbo (북향보) to explore how Manchukuo’s migration policies defined and constrained the legal status and livelihoods of Korean migrants, imposing tangible limitations on their daily lives. In this process, the chapter also addresses how Korean migrants came to occupy an instrumentalized position with in Japanese imperial policy, which in turn generated inevitable conflicts with Manchurian and Chinese populations.
The chapter further examines the formation of collective villages and agricultural policies as depicted in Earthen Fortress (토성) and Bukhyangbo(북향보), analyzing the meaning of “stability” promoted by the Manchukuo regime and the modes of governance that underpinned it. While stability is presented as a condition for protection from bandit threats and for securing livelihoods, it also functioned as a means of incorporating Korean migrants into the colonial order. Through this analysis, the thesis reveals that the stability promised by Manchukuo was the product of a governing strategy, and examines how the ideal of bukhyangwas constrained and transformed by institutional and political logic.
By rereading Ahn Su-gil’s early works through the lens of bukhyang, this thesis reassesses their significance and contribution. In doing so, it aims to illuminate how Korean literature responded to the realities of a specific historical time and space, and to clarify the layered concerns and choices embedded within these literary texts.
