Since the 2000s, China has actively promoted a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional culture as part of cultural confidence policies, alongside the growing popularity of Guochao consumption. In this context, the Neo-Chinese Style (新中式) has emerged as a fashion trend that integrates traditional Chinese attire with contemporary design, gaining particular prominence in online spaces since 2022. While previous studies have largely framed Neo-Chinese Style dress as a general fusion of tradition and modernity, further analysis is required to understand which traditional elements are adopted, how they are reconfigured, and what cultural meanings are generated through these processes.
This study focuses on Xiaohongshu(RED), a social media platform popular among fashion-conscious young female users, and examines how Neo-Chinese Style clothing is represented in digital contexts and how its cultural meanings are generated through user interactions. In doing so, this research aims to examine Neo-Chinese Style as it is articulated through the wearers’ actual dress practices and explore how the contemporary Chinese youth perceive and reinterpret traditional culture.
This study adopts a qualitative research design, combining a literature review and case analysis of social media content. The research scope is constrained to posts published on Xiaohongshu since 2022 that explicitly mention "New Chinese Style" and have an interaction index exceeding 5,000. The dataset consists of posts published on Xiaohongshu after 2022 that explicitly mentioned 'Neo-Chinese Style' and have an interaction index exceeding 5,000. A total of 238 post texts, 562 images of Neo-Chinese style outfit, and 1,723 comments were extracted for analysis.
In this study, Neo-Chinese Style clothing is defined as clothing that draws upon
the formal characteristics and internal meanings of traditional and modern Chinese clothing, while incorporating modern tailoring techniques, materials and aesthetic preferences to reinterpret 'Chineseness' in a contemporary context. This study examines the meanings of New Chinese Style dress through Barthes' semiotic approach to fashion. In this study, Chinese clothing elements are understood as signs with stable historically derived formal characteristics and symbolic meanings that function as recognizable visual markers of Chineseness in contemporary discourse.
The findings are as follows.
First, rather than comprehensively incorporate all traditional Chinese clothing elements from all periods of history, Neo-Chinese Style clothing selectively adopts specific items and structural features from particular historical periods. The Chinese clothing signs observed in Neo-Chinese Style content primarily consist of curated combinations of items, structures, motifs and materials from the Tang, Song, Ming, Qing and Republican eras. Unlike the strict historical reconstructive approach seen in Hanfu, Neo-Chinese Style tends to prioritize practical adaptation of traditional clothing to suit contemporary lifestyles. In particular, key elements such as collars and fastening structures effectively signal Chinese identity. In some cases, instead of directly applying traditional elements, more implicit modes of expression emerge through textured fabrics, calligraphic elements or motifs derived traditional painting. As a result, 'Chineseness' is linked to clothing signs historically shared across the East Asian cultural sphere and is recontextualised within a broader cultural spectrum.
Second, analysis of posts and comments on “Neo-Chinese clothing” on Xiaohongshu revels that meanings are continuously generated through cycles of evaluation, empathy, disagreement, and negotiation. Consequently, the Neo-Chinese Style is interpreted and circulated through multiple coexisting dimensions, including differentiated gender imagery, imagined social hierarchies, emotional tension surrounding historical symbols, the sharing of auspicious symbolism and aspirational sentiments, and affirmative attitudes toward traditional cultural values. Notably, these meanings become particularly salient when positive traditional elements such as historical auspicious motifs are juxtaposed with contemporary, everyday contexts, foreign cultural settings, and transnational exchanges.
The internal meanings of Neo-Chinese style clothing are formed through the partial inheritance of traditional clothing symbolism with a contemporary reinterpretation. In particular, meanings related to gender and social class are formed through the reactivation of historically accumulated symbolic associations embedded in silhouettes and material within the Chinese clothing culture. For example, in gender-neutral styles, linear silhouettes derived from traditional clothing envelop the body, thereby reducing gender visibility, while restrained elegance associated with Eastern femininity is reconstructed through qipao styles of the Republican period. Similarly, in “Chinese Old Money” style clothing, the frequent appearance of Republican-era clothing items and zhijin (brocade) textiles is closely linked to the historical context of the rising social status of merchants.
The meanings of the Neo-Chinese Style are also shaped by a sense of dissonance that emerges as traditional Chinese clothing – historcially ceremonial and non-everyday in nature – are relocated into contemporary everyday spaces. This suggests that as traditional elements become more fully assimilated into daily contexts, their symbolic visibility and recognizability tend to diminish, thereby narrowing the scope of discursive engagement with their meanings. Highly recognizable Chinese traditional items were frequently observed in content set in overseas locations, which may be interpreted as a strategic deployment aimed at facilitating the immediate legibility of Chineseness in culturally distinct environments
These findings extend beyond the conventional interpretation of Neo-Chinese Style as merely a product of the fusion of tradition and modernity. Instead, these results demonstrate that on Xiaohongshu, Neo-Chinese Style operates as a cultural mechanism through which meanings are generated by the mediation of differences between tradition and modernity, as well as between Eastern and Western cultural spheres. Overall, the meanings naturalized within the Neo-Chinese Style discourse on Xiaohongshu indicate the tendency for traditional Chinese clothing culture to be recognized as a positive identity resource, while simultaneously being embraced as a flexible stylistic asset through which individual taste is articulated.
This study holds academic significance in that it empirically examines the expressive patterns of Neo-Chinese Style clothing that have gained visibility on social media by analyzing content produced by influential users who actively wear and share such styles. In contrast to prior discussions that focused primarily on conceptual definitions or design trends, this research turns to empirical cases circulated and consumed on social media platforms, examining the visual and narrative modes through which Neo-Chinese Style clothing and styling are articulated. Furthermore, by applying a semiotic approach and understanding representative elements of Chinese clothing as signs, this study examines their expressive characteristics and meaning-making processes. This methodological approach, which integrates clothing culture research with semiotic theory, offers a contribution to the expansion of analytical frameworks in fashion studies.
Despite its contributions, this study has several limitations. First, as the case analysis was conducted primarily on Xiaohongshu, the platform's algorithmic structure, user composition, and content consumption patterns may have influenced the findings. Future research could adopt a comparative approach by examining platforms with different circulation structures and usage purposes-such as Douyin or Weibo-to more comprehensively investigate variations in the narrative construction of Neo-Chinese Style discourse and modes of identity performance. Second, as this study is based on qualitative interpretations of visual and textual materials, it does not empirically address economic dimensions such as actual purchasing behavior or brand strategies. Future studies could therefore incorporate quantitative analysis and platform-based data analysis to complement the interpretive findins. Third, because the sample was selected according to influence-based metrics, only one male content creator was included, thereby limiting gender-related analysis to a predominantly female-centered context. Subsequent research should aim for a more gender-balanced sample in order to examine of the expressive patterns of Neo-Chinese Style menswear more systematically.
