While counseling supervision is a pivotal process for the professional development of novice counselors, its hierarchical and evaluative structure often renders supervisees vulnerable to negative self-conscious emotions such as shame. Such experiences of shame may inhibit supervisees’ self-disclosure and undermine the effectiveness of supervision, highlighting the need for effective emotion regulation strategies. Grounded in Processing Mode Theory, the present study experimentally examined the differential effects of concrete and abstract processing modes on shame elicited in supervision contexts.
Participants were 50 novice counselors in Korea who were enrolled in or had completed a master’s program or higher, had less than three years of counseling experience, had received at least five total supervision sessions, and had undergone supervision at least once within the past six months. The procedure involved inducing shame by having participants recall a shame-related supervision experience, after which they were randomly assigned to either a concrete processing group or an abstract processing group to complete a writing task corresponding to their assigned condition. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) to examine overall group differences after controlling for pretest shame scores, followed by univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to verify specific effects on sub-factors.
The results indicated that, after controlling for baseline shame, the concrete processing group showed a significantly lower overall level of supervisory shame (SISI) compared to the abstract processing group. In the sub-factor analyses, the concrete processing group demonstrated significantly lower scores than the abstract processing group in ‘Sense of inadequacy as a counselor,’ ‘Burden regarding self-disclosure,’ and ‘Fear of abandonment and rejection.’ However, no significant group difference was found for the ‘Concealment from the supervisor’ factor.
These findings provide empirical evidence that concrete processing is more effective than abstract processing in alleviating shame within supervision contexts. Attending to the concrete context and process of experience, rather than engaging in abstract interpretation, appears particularly beneficial for regulating self-conscious emotions such as shame. The present study offers practical implications for counselor education and supervision by providing an empirical foundation for intervention strategies aimed at enhancing supervisees’ emotional well-being and professional development.
