This study examines Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 35 (1933) within the sociocultural context of the early 1930s Soviet Union, analyzing it from the perspective of Soviet montage aesthetics. Composed in 1933, the concerto emerged during a transitional period between the 1932 dissolution of proletarian cultural organizations and the 1934 adoption of Socialist Realism. During this time, Shostakovich sought to navigate the delicate balance between artistic autonomy and political demands.
To understand the unique circumstances of the concerto's composition, this study explores the sociocultural background by examining Soviet cultural policy, the art music establishment, and popular culture from the 1917 Revolution to 1934, divided into four distinct periods. The research then investigates the montage aesthetic principle that permeated Soviet arts in the late 1920s. By examining this principle and its implementation across artistic disciplines, the study analyzes how it fundamentally shaped Shostakovich’s first piano concerto.
The analysis first identifies three coexisting musical tendencies in the concerto: popular idioms, quotation and parody, and the grotesque. Popular elements manifest through familiar dance forms such as the waltz and galop, while classical works by Beethoven and Haydn appear as parodic quotations. The grotesque emerges through exaggerated expressions, including extreme registers and tempi that depart from conventional norms. Based on the principle of montage, these elements form interrelated relationships as they collide, juxtapose, and at times overlay within a vertical structure.
The study then examines how the montage principle operates in each movement at both structural and thematic levels. In the first movement, the development unfolds through abrupt collisions and interruptions rather than organic growth, employing horizontal and vertical montage within the sonata form. The second movement features a waltz parodied with melancholic lyricism that contrasts with its elegant dance character. This melancholic waltz combines with a dramatic and intense piano solo, creating a heterogeneous texture. Structured through the contrast between linear lyricism and vertical homophony, the brief third movement serves as a transitional interlude. The finale is based on an exaggerated galop, expanding the traditional rondo-sonata form through montage-like interruptions and shifts. Quotations and parodies of various styles culminate in a clear homophonic texture characterized by distinct tonality, strong vertical harmonies, and a popular character. All movements proceed attacca, forming a narrative structure that begins with experimental language and resolves in an affirmative, heroic C Major conclusion.
Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1 reflects both the influence of Soviet montage and the transitional cultural policies of the early 1930s, demonstrating a balance between the composer's originality and the era's ideological demands. The research redefines Soviet montage not merely as a cinematic technique but as a foundational aesthetic principle that defined early twentieth-century Soviet art and formed the basis of musical structure. This study holds academic significance in that it provides a detailed analysis of each movement through the framework of montage, offering a holistic analysis of Shostakovich's diverse musical tendencies.
