This study investigates how the interplay between narratorial and character voices
in Ian McEwan’s Saturday, articulated through free indirect discourse, functions as
a mechanism for shaping the reader’s ethical response and judgment. The central
thesis posits that the “narrative gap”—emerging at the interstices where the
character’s consciousness and the narrator’s voice neither fully coincide nor clearly
diverge—prompts the reader’s ethical “positioning.” Consequently, instead of
arriving at definitive moral conclusions, the reader is compelled to engage with the
text by suspending judgment and assuming an interpretive responsibility toward the
Other.
To substantiate this argument, the study employs James Phelan’s rhetorical theory
of narrative as its primary methodological framework to examine how the dynamic
interaction of voices constructs narrative conditions that demand the suspension of
judgment.
Chapter 1 analyzes the process by which Henry Perowne’s epistemological
certainty, grounded in scientific rationality, is destabilized amidst a series of public
and private events. Through free indirect discourse, the narrator exposes Perowne’s
cognitive biases and limitations while maintaining an ironic distance. This narrative
strategy precludes the reader’s total identification with the protagonist, thereby
fostering a critical distance that allows the reader to perceive the text’s inherent
uncertainty.
Chapter 2 focuses on the home invasion and the recitation of “Dover Beach,”
reinterpreting these scenes not as mere resolutions of violence but as ethical events
requiring the reader’s ethical imagination and affect. The study demonstrates that
Baxter’s reaction to the poem and his subsequent fall create an interpretative void
that transcends Perowne’s medical causality. This ambiguity forces the reader to
withhold immediate moral judgment and confront the infinite responsibility to
respond to the unknowable Other.
In conclusion, Saturday does not prescribe a fixed moral lesson but rather
functions as a practical field for ethics. By situating the reader within a space of
narrative uncertainty, the novel cultivates an ethics of responsiveness and
responsibility.
