This paper names ‘Biopspecies Art’ as a branch of biological arts, art that focuses on and expresses the characteristics and knowledge of biospecies in their relations with humans under environmental crises such as climate change and the sixth mass extinction. It classifies and categorizes it from a curatorial perspective and examines the significance of this artistic practice. The term "biological species" was coined in 1953, and in the 21st century, it was used alongside the term "technospecies" in the field of humanology, "the study of humans overcoming species boundaries." The emergence and use of biospecies has become increasingly prominent amidst environmental crises, such as the recent climate change crisis and the anxiety over human domination by artificial intelligence. Like the Cambrian Explosion, the explosive growth of AI services is looming as a crisis for modern humanity. Amidst the changes in our survival environment, in particular, depending on the climate change crises such as global warming, COVID-19 pandemic, earthquakes or tsunamies caused by “Great Acceleration,” the decline of ‘Biological diversity’ threatens the survival of humanity.

Owing to this threat, the biological industries such as synthetic biology, molecular biology, genetic engineering rapidly thrive as the leading industries of the 21st century. Through biology exploring the characteristics of living creatures, based on the life phenomenon which is found in observation and experiments, the blossom of biological industries more stands out variation of species and the biological diversity. In the art scenes, the tendency expressing the individual reaction of living organisms in ecosystem increases with posthuman perspective getting out of anthropocentrism. These artistic interest about biospecies weighs on characteristics and knowledge of organism. This concern shows a different aspect from Bio Art which uses ‘living system’ to artistic practice by technology and genetic engineering. Also, it is different from ecological arts which focus on ecological circulation and coexistence in order to return the ecological era where no humans exist.

In forming a discourse on biospecies arts, I derived a point of view, ‘Searching for boundary conditions of Equilibrium,’ which is the appropriate point for reaching equilibrium, “the most stable status for the survival of both organism and complex entities of organisms” from artworks that I examined. In common, I found out that the biospecies arts present biological forms, but since they are mingled biological elements with artificial ones, they seem like ‘Machine resembling organism’ or ‘Organism resembling machine.’ For dealing with the Biospecies Art, this paper draws upon the concept of species from Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life(1859), connecting it to the curatorial framework as dealing with the representation of species in art. The key concept of “variation,” which defines and differentiates species, and biodiversity given rise by variation are applied as a critical criterion for distinguishing and interpreting artworks within biospecies art.

Furthermore, By using the classification on a specific theme during the process of an exhibition curation applied to derive a new perspective, this study organizes the subjects of biospecies art—centered on the concepts of species variation and biodiversity—into three categories: individuals, groups of individuals, and biome. Depending on where the expression of ‘Equilibrium’, each space is distinguished each unit space of expression subjects. For an individual, since ‘Equilibrium of individual’ is metabolism keeping homeostasis, ‘internal space’ where individual’s organ would be the subject of expression. For group of individuals, the space of multi-species reveals ‘quarantine space’ where individuals of several multi-species are collected like samples by isolating from external contact. For biome as expression subject, it is visualized interaction in ‘Open space’ where multi-species are formed like biome other than quarantine space.’ Based on these settings, the curatorial analysis examines how the struggles for equilibrium are depicted and what temporal characteristics these struggles exhibit. According to the unit of expression, these are categorized as “species metabolism_migratory/sustained,” “interspecies mutual acceptance_demonstrative/ temporary,” and “biome_purification/cyclical.” This classification is linked to Darwin’s concept of variation, which is mainly categorized into three types within the framework of the study.

The first category, “Chapter 3. Expressions of Organismic Variability,” encompasses biospecies art that depict the pursuit of homeostasis through the interlinked operations of living organs for survival, or that focus on the mobility of organisms driven by the will to live. In artworks like Kim Seola’s Nine Dark Openings, The Sound of Breathing(2021), the imagery evokes the physiological equilibrium achieved through continuous feedback within an organism. Similarly, Mire Lee’s Carriers and Endless House: Holes and Drips(2022), and Messon Jessica Pae’s Pulse(Peach)(2022), engage with the cybernetic concept of “communication and control between animals and machines” through mechanical devices and simulated imagery. The struggles of individual organisms to maintain homeostasis often manifest as variation and migration, as seen in Agnes Questionmark’s Attempt II(2023), Hong hyunsook’s 12m Below: The Spectacle of Species(2021), and Anicka Yi’s Each Branch of Coral Holds Up the Light of the Moon(2024). While not representing physical migration, Chen Chen Yu’s Shapeshifters from where and whom contour(2020), by Anyone envisions a new form of species in posthuman society, one that continuously migrates through streams of data within digital platforms.

The second category, “Chapter 4. Simulated Representations of Quarantine for Breeding and Cultivation,” includes biospecies art that temporarily arrange individual organisms within isolated spaces to explore the boundary conditions of equilibrium through interspecies mutual acceptance. These works attempt to get rid of existential anxiety by experimenting with ways of coexistence in confined environments. In artworks such as Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg’s Designing for the Sixth Extinction(2013~2015) and Sofia Crespo’s Interlocking Growths(2023), the depicted forms resemble living organisms yet are artificially created by humans, encouraging viewers to imagine the living organisms that might emerge in the future. Similarly, Pei-Ying Lin’s Virophilia(2018-2020), Pierre Huyghe’s Cambrian Explosion 16(2018), and Max Hooper Schneider’s Parallax Lagoon(2023) envision the potential for symbiosis, living together regarding cells forming organism as even with entities which would be harmful to humans. The representation of ‘Quarantine’ thus visualizes biomes filled with hybrid entities fused with mechanical elements, ultimately linking this category to the third group, which focuses on ecological biodiversity and biome equilibrium.

The third category, “Chapter 5. Visualization of Ecological Biodiversity and Biome Equilibrium,” encompasses biospecies art that integrate the elements presented in the first and second categories to explore the boundary conditions of equilibrium through biomes fused with artificial structures. In open spatial ecosystems, artworks such as Philip Beesley’s Epiphyte Chamber(2013) and Marco Barotti’s Clam(2019) continuously strive toward equilibrium. Artificial materials, as in Camilla Alberti’s Learning in Disbinding(2023), are no longer depicted as harmful to humanity but rather as symbiotic entities forming parts of the biome. Similarly, pieces like Team Homo Pollinella’s Homo Paulinella The Lab: Don't you cry, dear Zarathustra(2020), Emilija Škarnulytė’s Æqualia(2023), and Jung Haejung’s Liquid Bodies(2022) portray nonhuman agents that sustain equilibrium alongside humans, visually revealing their inevitable transformations within ongoing cycles of change. Elaine Gan’s Invasion of Sap-Sucking Planthoppers(2020) reflects on the meaning of biodiversity within a food chain system created by humans. Maintaining equilibrium among diverse species is on the same context like the pursuit of balance among physiological substances in an organism. Also, it is overcome of the crisis to resolve survival anxiety by linking to the first and the second category which as mentioned before. As Darwin proposed, it is necessary to focus on the relation of interlocking relational growths. From the point of this view, humans also are elements of present ecosystem, so it plays a role to keep homeostasis of the whole ecological system.

In the posthuman wave, ‘Searching for the boundary condition of Equilibrium’ penetrate as a key curatorial thought into Biospecies Art, which presents forms of new species and resolve ontological anxiety resulted from ecological crisis such as climate change and the Sixth Extinction including extinction and being ruled by Homo Deus like God with super intelligence looming soon. Biospecies Art is the art practice on future to show a will not to greet dystopia. In 1960s and 1970s, unlike Environmental Art to guard nature or Eco Art to return to Cambrian Era, Biospecies Art keep resolving ontological disquiet and revealing “technospecies resembling biospecies, biospecies resembling technospecies” which could not be found so far by humans. And then, Biospecies Art don’t exclude the present humanity, accept variation of the present humans in evolution, and tell symbiosis with nonhuman unlike myself as a way for humanity to survive. The posthuman ecosystem which Biospecies Art present is approaching techno-humanology exploring liminality between humans and nonhumans.

The kernel outcome of the study is not an extra material to support conclusion but the first research outcome to condense most well the result of analysis of the research. In particular, it is condensed to “[Table 1. Curatorial Classification of Biospecies Art and the Concept of Species Variation].” This table is the critical result compiled methodological meaning and the scholarly contribution. In the artworks researched and examined for this study, ‘Exploring the boundary conditions of Equilibrium’ is penetrated in common. For the paper to establish discourse on ongoing species art, with the foundation of theoretical concept, Darwin’s variation concept and Biodiversity, it is meaningful to systematize three curatorial classification, “individual/internal space(individual variation),” “group of individuals/quarantine space(breeding·cultivation).” “biome/equilibrium.” Through this research, the curatorial trial to unveil ‘Processuality’ of Biospecies Art is like the struggle to form more futuristic oriented artistic culture more by securing diversity as well as artists pursuing Biospecies Art. As the categories and concepts of Biospecies Art, which the paper brings up, cannot help changing like curatorial classification, this study left continuous scholarly assignment speculating constantly relations with new species and techno-based artworks appearing further.

(On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life)』(1859)(이하 『종의 기원』으로 표기)로부터 종의 개념을 가져와 큐레이토리얼 관점과 연결하였다.

(Each Branch of Coral Holds Up the Light of the Moon)>(2024)에서 찾아볼 수 있다.

(Designing for the Sixth Extinction)>(2013~2015),

(On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life)』(1859)(이하 『종의 기원』으로 표기)로부터 종의 개념을 가져와 큐레이토리얼 관점과 연결하였다.

(Each Branch of Coral Holds Up the Light of the Moon)>(2024)에서 찾아볼 수 있다.

(Designing for the Sixth Extinction)>(2013~2015),
