This study examines the nature and significance of animal sacrifice rituals conducted in high-mounded tombs (gochong) of the Yeongnam region during the Three Kingdoms period, focusing on the large assemblage of faunal remains excavated from the Imdang-dong and Joyeong-dong burial clusters in Gyeongsan. While previous studies have tended to concentrate on isolated cases—most notably horse sacrifice—or have treated faunal remains merely as residues of food offerings, this research repositions animal remains as material evidence of repeated and cumulative ritual actions embedded within the broader funerary process. The primary objective of this study is to reconstruct the procedural structure of animal sacrifice rituals and to elucidate their social and ideological implications.
The Imdang-dong and Joyeong-dong cemeteries have yielded tens of thousands of animal remains from a wide range of spatial contexts, including the main and auxiliary burial chambers, mound fill, stone settings, and areas outside the tombs. This spatial diversity indicates that funerary rituals were not single, momentary events but rather extended processes encompassing both burial rites and subsequent commemorative or sacrificial rites. Each stage involved distinct forms of animal sacrifice with differentiated purposes and symbolic meanings. Accordingly, this study analyzes the spatial distribution, taxonomic composition, anatomical representation, and depositional patterns of faunal remains in relation to specific ritual stages.
The analysis demonstrates that animal sacrifice rituals followed systematic principles of selection and deposition rather than arbitrary or uniform practices. In particular, sacrifice mediated through pottery vessels reveals a close correlation with the functional differentiation between the main and auxiliary chambers. Variations in vessel types and placement correspond to differences in the species and body parts of sacrificed animals, indicating that pottery functioned not merely as grave goods but as a crucial medium through which animal sacrifice rituals were enacted.
Furthermore, an examination at the level of adjoining tomb clusters shows that the form, scale, and composition of animal sacrifice varied according to the sex, age, social rank, and group affiliation of the principal deceased. These findings suggest that animal sacrifice rituals served not only to express individual status but also to materialize social relationships and hierarchical order within the burial community. Changes observed after the late fifth century, including a reduction and reconfiguration of animal sacrifice associated with the broader trend toward simplified burial practices, are interpreted not as the disappearance of ritual meaning but as adaptive transformations in response to shifting social and political conditions.
In conclusion, animal sacrifice rituals in the high-mounded tombs of the Yeongnam region constituted a central component of the funerary system, materially articulating the identity of the deceased, the socio-economic capacity of the sponsoring group, and fundamental aspects of ancient worldviews. By foregrounding the Imdang-dong and Joyeong-dong cemeteries, this study redefines animal sacrifice as a core analytical key to reconstructing funerary ritual structures and proposes an integrated framework for understanding the logic and meaning of Three Kingdoms–period mortuary practices in the Yeongnam region.
