Social conflicts arising from competing interests in contemporary societies are inevitable, and cultivating citizenship to address them rationally remains a central mission of schooling. Social studies education has long emphasized the importance of discussing controversial issues to develop critical thinking and explore diverse perspectives. Despite this pedagogical imperative, such discussions rarely occur in classrooms due to teachers’ concerns about potential backlash, psychological discomfort, and interpersonal conflict. While classroom climate has been recognized as crucial for creating safe spaces for student dialogue, existing research has focused narrowly on quantitative measures of participation such as speaking frequency, without examining how classroom climate specifically influences students' willingness to engage in discussions of controversial issues.
This study empirically analyzes how classroom climate affects middle school students' willingness to engage in discussions of controversial issues in social studies instruction. It extends the concept of discussion participation beyond speaking to include listening and reflection as forms of qualitative engagement.
Open classroom climate refers to an environment where free expression and mutual respect are ensured, and issues are examined from multiple perspectives. Willingness to engage in discussions encompasses both the disposition to express one's views (verbal participation willingness) and the readiness to respect others' perspectives and reconsider one's own positions (reflective participation willingness). It was hypothesized that more open classroom climates would increase both students' verbal participation willingness and their reflective participation willingness.
Multiple regression analysis was conducted using data from 327 middle school students in the Seoul metropolitan area. Classroom climate showed no significant effect on verbal participation willingness. Publicly expressing one's views among peers appears to depend more on individual traits such as extroversion and political interest than on environmental factors. In contrast, classroom climate had a significant positive effect on reflective participation willingness. Students who perceive their classroom as a safe and open space for sharing diverse opinions are more likely to listen to others' perspectives and reconsider their own views.
These findings yield several implications. First, assessing student participation in discussions of controversial issues should not focus solely on speaking frequency but recognize the importance of reflective participation. Second, students who speak less should not be regarded as non-participants, as engagement can take various forms beyond verbal expression. Third, open classroom climate deserves renewed attention as a condition enabling tolerance and mutual understanding.
