This study explores the construction of ‘whiteness’ within 19th-century musical culture, with a specific focus on the music and reception of Johannes Brahms. The investigation is structured into two primary dimensions: a historical examination of the ideological formation of Brahms’s cultural persona, and a practical analysis of how this established image functions within the contemporary performance sphere. Consequently, this research elucidates the historical process through which Brahms’s music came to embody universal whiteness, while simultaneously scrutinizing the impact of this racialized framework on Black classical musicians. Through this dual approach, the study reveals the mechanism of ‘unmarkedness’ in Western classical music and its exclusionary effects in practice.
First, the historical trajectory through which Brahms’s oeuvre became an emblem of cultural whiteness is investigated. During the mid-to-late nineteenth century in Vienna, his music was deeply intertwined with the liberal-bourgeois ethos of Bildung. Although ostensibly universal, this ideal operated as a subtle tool of exclusion, effectively distancing the 'civilized' German elite from those cast as 'uncultured' Others. With the waning of Viennese liberalism, the cultural authority Brahms’s music once held risked being perceived as a relic of a bygone era. However, during the Weimar Republic, his legacy was strategically reclaimed and reframed as a manifestation of 'healthy German national character' in opposition to the perceived decadence of modernism. Furthermore, the institutionalization of musicology, pioneered by figures such as Guido Adler, bestowed upon Brahms’s music a status of ‘unmarkedness’—an aesthetic neutrality that allowed it to be perceived as a transhistorical, universal standard transcending specific ethnic or national markers.
Second, the practical implications of this constructed whiteness are scrutinized through the reception of the African American contralto Marian Anderson. Utilizing the theoretical framework of the ‘Sonic Color Line,’ the analysis confirms that the performance of Brahmsian Lieder served as a strategic site for Black musicians to negotiate and acquire cultural whiteness. Nevertheless, such efforts encountered persistent racial skepticism concerning the ability of Black musicians to genuinely embody the ‘German spirit’. A critical illustration of this tension is found in the 1936 performance of the Alto Rhapsody, featuring Anderson and the Jewish conductor Bruno Walter. This event exemplifies a profound historical irony: 'Othered' subjects performing a work fundamentally centered on the spiritual salvation of the German male subject within a socio-cultural hierarchy that systematically excluded them.
In conclusion, this paper argues that the ‘whiteness’ of Brahms' music is not an inherent essence of the sound itself, but a status culturally and historically constructed through 19th-century German ideology and the canonization process. By illuminating these dynamics, this study expands critical perspectives on the Western music canon.
