For centuries, gemstones have been associated with high social and economic
value based on their aesthetic appeal and rarity. However, recent developments in
science and technology such as the emergence of lab-grown diamonds and —
various new materials have begun to destabilize these long-standing value —
standards. This suggests that the formative methods of jewelry require a new
approach that reflects the changing material environment and value perceptions.
This study aims to reconsider the traditional value system of gemstones within
contemporary conditions and explore jewelry formation from a new perspective.
First, the hierarchical relationship in jewelry traditionally centered on gemstones —
with metal as a supporting element was dismantled and reinterpreted. By treating —
gemstones and metal as materials of equal importance, the study sought new
structural and formal possibilities. Second, the study investigates how socially constructed hierarchies between
materials might be rebuilt within the creative process. Materials were conceptually
reduced to their smallest expressive units: metal was represented through silver
granules using the granulation technique, while gemstones were explored through
gemstone powder, emphasizing their material essence rather than their socially
assigned worth.
Third, carbon allotropes such as industrial diamonds and graphite were used to
highlight the contrast between materials that are chemically identical yet valued
very differently. This comparison underscores the diversity of materiality and invites
a shift toward understanding materials through their intrinsic characteristics rather
than external classifications.
Fourth, industrial diamonds were employed to consider how an industrial material
might gain new aesthetic meaning within jewelry. By incorporating diamond sheets
of varying grit levels and industrial diamond powder, the study demonstrates how
natural and industrial diamonds, despite sharing the same elemental foundation, can
be perceived as entirely different materials depending on cultural and contextual
interpretation.
In conclusion, this research questions conventional assumptions about material and
value in jewelry and proposes new formal directions emerging from the gap
between intrinsic properties and socially constructed systems of value. Rather than
functioning solely as symbols of prestige, gemstones are repositioned as materials
with layered meaning and expressive potential, offering both conceptual insight and
practical direction for future jewelry practice.
