병산서원의 기호학적 해석을 통한 제품 디자인 제안 = A Study on Product Design Proposal through Semiotic Interpretation of Byeongsan Seowon

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리 전통문화에 대한 대중적 관심은 최근 국립중앙박물관의 관람객 수치나 문화상품 브랜드인 ‘뮷즈(MU:DS)’의 폭발적인 매출 성장에서 확인되듯 전례 없는 전환기를 맞이하고 있다. 과거 선진국을 추격하던 양(量)적 성장 시대를 지나, 이제는 우리 고유의 자산에서 독창적인 질(質)적 성장의 동력을 찾아야 할 시점이다. 이러한 시대적 요구에 발맞추어, 병산서원이 지닌 유·무형의 가치를 발굴하고 이를 기호학적 관점에서 재해석하여 현대 산업디자인의 영역으로 확장하고자 하였다. 전통문화의 고유성을 온전히 탐구하기 위해서는 표면적 특징 이면에 숨겨진 의미 구조를 파악하는 작업이 선행되어야 한다. 이어령이 강조한 "제 것을 아는 삶"의 태도는 대상을 감각적 기표와 개념적 기의로 구분하여 탐구하는 기호학적 접근과 맥을 같이한다. 본고에서는 한국 서원 건축의 정수로 꼽히는 병산서원을 분석 대상으로 삼아, 그 안에 내재된 성리학적 가치와 자연의 조화를 현대적 디자인 언어로 변용하는 데 집중하였다.
구체적인 실행 방법으로서, 기호학 이론 고찰과 선행 연구 분석을 토대로 3차에 걸친 단계별 작품 연구를 수행하였다. 실질적인 분석 결과, 건축물의 조형 요소에서 도출된 22개의 표현 인자를 6개의 핵심 기호로 정제하였으며, 이를 통해 데스크 램프와 파티션, 플로어 조명 등 실질적인 제품 디자인을 제안하였다. 특히 병산서원의 동선과 시각적 조형 언어를 ‘바라보기’라는 세 가지 사용자 경험 컨셉으로 치환하여 작품의 정체성을 강화하였다.
나아가 3차 연구에서는 문양과 동선에 대한 해석에 이어령의 기호학적 담론을 더하여 조명과 오브제 디자인으로 최종 구현하였다. 일련의 과정을 통해 확인한 결과, 전통 건축의 외형적 모방을 넘어 내재된 ‘기호 공간’을 현대적으로 번역할 때 비로소 차별화된 문화 상품의 가치가 발생함을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로 본 논의는 한국 서원의 현대적 활용 가능성을 입증함으로써, 글로벌 시장에서 우리만의 독창적인 디자인 경쟁력을 확보하는 기틀을 마련하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

Public interest in Korean traditional culture has reached an unprecedented turning point, as evidenced by the record-breaking number of visitors to the National Museum of Korea and the explosive sales growth of the cultural product brand 'MU:DS' in 2025. Moving beyond an era of quantitative growth driven by benchmarking developed nations, Korea must now seek momentum for qualitative growth within its own unique cultural assets. In response to these contemporary demands, this study aims to discover the tangible and intangible values of Byeongsan Seowon and rebrand them within the realm of modern industrial design through a semiotic perspective.
To fully explore the uniqueness of traditional culture, it is essential to identify the underlying semantic language hidden beneath surface-level characteristics. The late cultural critic Lee Oyoung emphasized the importance of understanding one's own heritage, a stance that resonates with semiotic approaches to meaning-making, which distinguish between the sensory signifier and the conceptual signified. This paper focuses on Byeongsan Seowon, a masterpiece of Korean seowon architecture, to transform its inherent Neo-Confucian values and harmony with natureinto a modern design language.
As a practical methodology, a three-stage, incremental design study was conducted through an examination of semiotic theories and analysis of previous research. The empirical results refined 22 expressive factors derived from architectural elements into six core signs, leading to practical product design proposals such as desk lamps, partitions, and floor lights. In particular, the spatial movements and visual language of Byeongsan Seowon were translated into three user experience
concepts: 'Gazing with Movement,' 'Gazing Intently,' and 'Gazing Anew.'
Furthermore, the third stage of the study integrated Lee O-young's semiotic discourse into the interpretation of spatial patterns and circulation pathways culminating in lighting and object designs. Through this sequential process, it was confirmed that distinctive cultural value is uncovered when the “semiotic space” extends beyond formal imitation and is reinterpreted in a contemporary context. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential for the contemporary application of Korean seowons and contributes to the establishment of a foundation for distinctive design competitiveness in the global market.
