This thesis aims to examine the meaning of minjung (the people) that runs through the literature of Park Tae-sun by focusing on three epistemic axes—sensation, reflection, and the lifeworld—and to clarify the author’s distinctive position within the diverse currents of minjung literary discourse from the 1960s to the 1980s. The study analyzes three major works—The People of Oechon-dong (Oechon-dong Saramdeul), The Youth of a Certain History Student (Eoneu Sahakdo-ui Jeol-eun Sijeol), and The Land and the People (Gukto wa Minjung)—in order to explore how minjung is represented and foregrounded across different groups of texts.
Chapter 2 examines The People of Oechon-dong and identifies the point of departure of Park Tae-sun’s conception of minjung. The people who inhabit the urban margins are portrayed as dispersed figures who cannot constitute a central narrative or representative position. Their marginality, however, is not reduced to social inferiority; rather, it functions as the site where reality is perceived most immediately and where the sensibility of survival is activated.
Chapter 3 focuses on Park Tae-sun’s experience of translating Third World literature and on The Youth of a Certain History Student to analyze minjung as a subject of reflection. Encounters with writers such as Langston Hughes and Howard Fast prompted a critical shift away from understanding minjung as a socio-economic class or a national surrogate. The protagonist, Go Wang-man, is depicted as reaching historical consciousness through experiences of violence and fear, rather than through the language or ideology of intellectuals. In this respect, Park’s notion of minjung is clearly distinguished from the Marxist model of a revolutionary class subject, the national-representational subject associated with the critical tradition of Baek Nak-cheong, and the communal archetype emphasized in agrarian literary discourse.
Chapter 4 examines The Land and the People and analyzes minjung as a residual and lifeworld-oriented existence. The genre of travel writing serves as a literary strategy for directly recording the wounds of the land and the lives of the people without fictional mediation. As Park travels through submerged villages, massacre sites, and landscapes devastated by modernization, he discovers that agrarian sensibilities and a sense of existential unity continue to persist. Here, minjung is neither a revolutionary force nor a national subject, nor a recoverable communal archetype, but an enduring presence that sustains the continuity of life upon a damaged land.
This thesis argues that Park Tae-sun’s conception of minjung cannot be subsumed under any single dominant paradigm of minjung literature—whether centered on revolution and class, national representation, or communal archetypes. Instead, minjung emerges as a multilayered existence constituted across different epistemic dimensions of sensation, reflection, and the lifeworld. By rethinking minjung not as an idealized subject of grand historical narratives but as those who most immediately perceive and endure the violence and destruction of modern Korean history, Park Tae-sun’s literature opens a new literary horizon beyond the ideological frameworks of established minjung discourse. Through this analysis, the present study repositions Park Tae-sun within Korean literary history and proposes a critical perspective for rethinking the concept of minjung in modern Korean literature.
