수집된 자료는 SPSS와 Hayes(2017)의 PROCESS Macro(Model 6, 83)를 활용하여 분석하였다.

This study aims to examine the effects of meme-based advertising—so-called meme marketing—on consumer attitudes, with a particular focus on the roles of expectancy violation and brand familiarity in the underlying psychological mechanism. To this end, a 2×2 between-subjects experiment manipulating meme usage (use vs. non-use) and brand familiarity (high vs. low) was conducted with 397 Korean consumers aged 20–40 through an online survey. After viewing either meme-included or non-meme advertisements, participants responded to measures assessing perceived meme usage, brand familiarity, expectancy violation, attitude toward the ad, brand attitude, and humor need.
The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and Hayes’ (2017) PROCESS Macro (Model 6, 83).
The results showed, first, that advertisements using memes significantly decreased brand attitude compared to non-meme ads. Second, meme usage increased expectancy violation, which in turn worsened attitude toward the ad, and this negative ad attitude subsequently lowered brand attitude—confirming a significant sequential mediation pathway. Third, brand familiarity moderated this indirect effect: the negative impact of meme usage on brand attitude via expectancy violation and ad attitude was stronger for highly familiar brands. In particular, meme usage for familiar brands elicited the perception that the brand was “acting out of character,” leading to greater expectancy violation and more negative evaluations of both the ad and the brand.
These findings indicate that meme usage cannot be universally regarded as an effective communication tool for targeting MZ consumers; rather, its impact is dual in nature and may backfire depending on the relationship context and brand familiarity. By elucidating the psychological mechanism through which meme-based advertising shapes brand attitudes and by empirically verifying the moderating role of brand familiarity, this study expands theoretical discussions in meme marketing and provides practical implications regarding the careful selection of brands and contexts in which meme usage is appropriate.
