물건, 사물, 조각 : 안규철과 정서영의 1990년대-2000년대 작업을 중심으로 = Object, Thing, Sculpture: Focusing on the Works of Ahn Kyuchul and Chung Seoyoung from the 1990s to the 2000s

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 안규철과 정서영의 작업을 1990년대 동시대 조건 속에서 그들만의 특정한 방식으로 조각을 재정의하고자 했던 시도로 읽어보고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 이들만의 방식을 물건에서 ‘사물’로 전환하는 것으로 보고 있다. 전환된 사물은 이들이 생각하기에 당대 조각이 갖춰야 할 태도와 가치를 지니고, 조각의 역할을 수행하는 것이었다. 이는 1990년대 후기 자본주의 혹은 소비사회로 논의되는 변모한 한국의 물질적‧미학적 조건 속에서 모색되어야 할 조각의 새로운 면모였다. 본 논문은 사물로의 전환 과정을 분석하고, ‘사물’이 이들에게 당대 새로운 ‘조각’으로서 이해될 수 있었던 배경을 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis examines the work of Ahn Kyuchul and Chung Seoyoung as an attempt to redefine sculpture in their own unique way within the contemporary conditions of the 1990s. This study defines their approach as a transition from Object to “Thing.”These transitioned things embody the attitudes and values that the artists believed Contemporary Sculpture should possess, thereby performing the role of sculpture itself. This was a new facet of Sculpture sought within the transformed material and aesthetic conditions of Korea in the 1990s, often discussed in the context of Late Capitalism and Consumer Society. This thesis analyzes the process of this transition to “Thingness” and explores the background through which the thing could be understood as a new form of “Sculpture”for these artists.
