Cultural heritage, as the material and spiritual crystallization of human history, constitutes a core repository of collective memory and serves as a foundational pillar in the evolution of civilization. It embodies exceptional cultural, artistic, historical, and scientific value. Since the mid-twentieth century, the international community has progressively advanced heritage protection at both conceptual and institutional levels. The adoption of the Venice Charter in 1964, followed by the establishment of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), laid a normative foundation for the conservation of monuments and sites. The 1972 World Heritage Convention and the subsequent formation of its governing committee further highlighted the global consequences of heritage degradation and promoted coordinated international action. In 1992, UNESCO launched the Memory of the World Programme to ensure the long-term preservation of documentary heritage and to enhance public accessibility to its associated knowledge resources.
With the rapid evolution of digital technologies, the research and practice of cultural-heritage digitization have expanded beyond major immovable monuments to encompass intangible heritage, digital libraries and museums, virtual restoration and reconstruction, and various forms of digital resource deployment. Nevertheless, despite more than three decades of sustained global initiatives and significant achievements, substantial potential for advancement remains. From the perspectives of impact scale, user engagement, and the depth of scholarly inquiry, cultural-heritage digitization continues to require strengthened efforts—particularly in the systematic articulation of heritage value and the comprehensive development of digital infrastructures.
As of 2023, Italy holds fifty-nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, positioning it among the most culturally endowed nations worldwide. Beyond the officially inscribed properties, the country retains a vast array of unlisted heritage resources, ranging from the road networks and engineering systems that embody the structural ingenuity of Roman civilization, to the agrarian architecture and cultural landscapes that articulate local identities and regional affiliations, as well as the irreplaceable fresco traditions that document the evolution of religious iconography and pictorial techniques. Collectively, these heterogeneous forms of heritage have profoundly shaped Italy’s military, political, economic, and artistic trajectories, while exerting a lasting influence on the formation and transformation of global cultural landscapes. A systematic investigation of Italy’s cultural heritage thus carries considerable academic significance and is equally vital for shaping forward-looking strategies of conservation and management, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of global cultural heritage.
Italy has long adhered to the principles of openness, interdisciplinarity, and collaborative governance in the management of its cultural heritage. Through interdepartmental and transnational partnerships, capacity-building initiatives, and international training programs, the country has progressively developed an integrated conservation system that is hierarchical in structure, broad in scope, and adaptable across diverse contexts. Within this framework, Italy has accumulated a body of transferable practical experience and methodological models that provide scientifically grounded support for decision-making in the face of emerging threats and complex situations. These contributions also serve as an important point of reference for the continued enhancement of global cultural-heritage conservation systems.
In terms of its specific object of inquiry, this study examines heraldry within the broader spectrum of Italian cultural heritage—an early visual system that emerged in the twelfth century for purposes of battlefield identification and subsequently developed, through processes of formalization and institutional codification, into a distinct pre-modern scholarly discipline. Heraldry operates simultaneously as an emblem of identity and a decorative art, embedding layered political, military, and cultural meanings while synthesizing the essential achievements of painting, sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts. Departing from existing scholarship that predominantly addresses historical or intellectual dimensions, this study foregrounds a systematic analysis of heraldic motifs and visual structures. It further evaluates their integrated significance across visual communication, design psychology, and decorative-arts methodologies, thereby engaging with the dual imperative of reinterpreting tradition and innovating within contemporary creative practice.
The objectives of this study are twofold. First, it seeks to identify viable pathways for the digital reinterpretation of heraldic visual language, adhering closely to its cultural origins and underlying symbolic logic, and to develop an immersive spatial–audiovisual narrative framework that enables its effective contemporary articulation and dissemination. Second, the study aims to formulate a transferable and scalable methodological model that simultaneously preserves the integrity of the historical visual system and aligns with current paradigms in digital design. Through this dual approach, the research provides a practical and adaptable framework for advancing the digital investigation and application of cultural heritage.
The scope of this study encompasses civic, familial, and ecclesiastical heraldry from fifteen Italian cities—Verona, Florence, Naples, Genoa, Rome, Lucca, Siena, Pisa, Pistoia, Volterra, Arezzo, Cortona, Sansepolcro, Milan, and Venice—during the period 1501–1600. The research methodology is organized into three stages: (1) a theoretical investigation of cultural-heritage digitization; (2) an iconographic and semantic analysis of Italian heraldry; and (3) a practice-based development of creative works. In the creative-production phase, the study integrates graphic visual design with animated audiovisual design to digitally reinterpret heraldic culture and construct an immersive narrative experience, thereby enhancing public understanding and fostering wider audience engagement.
In terms of theoretical contribution, this study delineates the core concepts of cultural-heritage digitization, identifies its constitutive elements across technological, resource, and industrial-application domains, and proposes a foundational methodological framework comprising visual development, animation processing, and interaction design. In the semantic dimension, the study undertakes a systematic analysis of the animal, plant, architectural, and celestial motifs within the Italian heraldic tradition from multiple perspectives—including poetics, cosmology, linguistics, genealogical literature, and family history. This analysis elucidates their hierarchical structures and cultural generative logic, thereby providing a robust foundation for interpreting heraldic visual language and translating these insights into actionable design principles.
At the practical level, the study develops a digital visual-language system endowed with both narrative and symbolic capacities through the production of four series of graphic and animated works. By extracting and recomposing visual symbols, and by orchestrating the layering and temporal dynamics of digital media, it constructs an integrated framework for contemporary digital representation grounded in heraldic imagery.
Taken together, the research advances an open and dynamic digital methodology articulated through an interconnected “theory–semantics–practice” framework. It offers a verifiable pathway for the contemporary revitalization of Italian heraldic culture and provides methodological insights that support the systematic advancement of cultural-heritage digitization.
In terms of creative contribution, this study takes Italian heraldic culture as its central theme and, drawing upon the theoretical foundations of cultural-heritage digitization together with the findings of heraldic semantic analysis, develops four series of digital audiovisual design works spanning two stages of practice: graphic visual design and animated audiovisual design. Through the deconstruction and reconstruction of visual symbols, the integrated application of digital media, and the construction of immersive narrative experiences, the study facilitates the revitalization and contemporary articulation of traditional heraldic culture within digital environments. Its contribution lies not only in rediscovering and recontextualizing the visual system of cultural heritage, but also in examining how digital technologies can intervene in and transform traditional artistic vocabularies. This exploration supports the development of a digital audiovisual language that synthesizes aesthetic, narrative, and symbolic dimensions, thereby offering a methodologically meaningful and practically applicable pathway for the digital revitalization of cultural heritage.
