This study aims to quantitatively analyze the structural variability of shaft tombs identified in the Colima region, West Mexico and to propose a new typological framework that addresses the limitations of existing classification systems. The typologies proposed by Long, Oliveros, and Hernández primarily relied on limited external attributes, such as the plan and cross-sectional shapes of shafts and chambers, and therefore failed to adequately capture the continuity of variation and its social implications.
Building on this problem, the present study applies hierarchical cluster analysis using quantitative variables such as chamber area, proportions, and depth to statistically classify the structural characteristics of shaft tombs. The purpose of this approach is to overcome the conventional reliance on selected artifacts for chronological assessment and to facilitate spatio-temporal comparison based on architectural attributes.
The analysis based on the newly established criteria identifies three distinct types of shaft tombs in the Colima region. The first type features circular or square chambers with an area of less than 5 m² and a length-to-width ratio below 1.3. This form reflects the enduring construction traditions and norms of Colima shaft tombs from Ortices to Comala phases. The second type is characterized by small, elongated oval chambers of less than 5 m² in area and a length-to-width ratio above 1.5. These occur sporadically from the Ortices to Colima phases and were mainly used for single interments, likely representing tombs built for special purposes such as infant burials or as variations shaped by geological constraints. The third type consists of large chambers exceeding 5 m² (often over 10 m²) with deep shafts, which appear exclusively at specific sites such as El Moralete during Comala phase. The emergence of this type indicates an expansion of burial space and greater labor investment, reflecting not only a quantitative enlargement but also expressions of social hierarchy and authority through funerary architecture.
In conclusion, the new typological framework proposed in this study clarifies the correlation between “structural scale” and “mortuary practice,” aspects that were not adequately captured by previous classifications. By encompassing information on scale, proportion, and context—elements overlooked in plan-based typologies—this system provides a more comprehensive framework for understanding the structural diversity and social transformation processes of shaft tombs in the Colima region.
