By rereading Ma Kwang-soo’s Joyful Sarah(1991) and Jang Jung-il’s Tell Me a Lie(1996) through the critical methodology called queering, this paper investigates the problematic position and subversive imagination of these texts within Korean literature of the 1990s. To date, both novels have been discussed predominantly in the moral and institutional terms, largely in relation to obscenity controversies and censorship cases. As a consequence, their literary experimentation with gender and sexuality, as well as their political implications, have remained insufficiently examined. Challenging these prevailing approaches, this study critically reassesses their limitations and analyzes the two novels through the lens of queer theory, which interrogates gender binarism and heteronormativity.
In this context, queering is understood not as an identity-based framework but as a critical practice that destabilizes normative regimes of normality. On this basis, the study conducts close textual readings of both works. In Tell Me a Lie, it examines the sexuality of the character “J,” whose practices involve queer temporality. It also challenges heteronormativity through the formation of female solidarity between “Y” and “Woori.” Furthermore, Jang Jung-il explores what may be termed “homosexual-doing”, a mode of performative practice, as a literary strategy. In Joyful Sarah, the analysis focuses on how the female protagonist “Sarah” is independently constituted and reproduced as a subject traversing labor, pleasure, and love, and explores Ma Kwang-soo’s subversive practice of becoming through what this study conceptualizes as “becoming-Sarah.” This study also addresses the issue of partyness raised by Ma Kwang-soo’s literary production. Through this analysis, this study examines the strategies through which the two works, while seemingly fully complicit with gender binarism and heteronormativity, paradoxically destabilize these norms from within.
By repositioning Ma Kwang-soo within literary history and moving beyond the established critical evaluations of Jang Jung-il’s work, this study proposes a renewed perspective on the sexual politics and heteronormative structures surrounding Korean literature in the 1990s. Furthermore, rereading these texts through the practice of queering underscores the need to expand scholarly discussions of gender and sexuality in Korean literary studies, and highlights the critical importance of reconstructing voices and experiences that have been excluded from the literary field.
