Departing from existing academic and social discourses that have predominantly perceived lesbian bars as mere spaces for leisure, consumption, or resistance, this study explores the multifaceted meanings of the lesbian bar as a "space of daily life." In this space, individuals reinterpret their identities, exchange care, and learn the practicalities of lesbian life. To this end, the researcher selected "A-Bar," located in Mapo-gu, as the research site and conducted participant observation and in-depth interviews. The main findings of the study are as follows.
First, research participants experience a positive affirmation of their minority identities within the lesbian bar, which leads to a profound attachment to the space. Unlike heteronormative society, where they are often compelled to conceal their gender expression and sexual orientation, A-Bar provides an environment where such concealment is unnecessary. Furthermore, participants undergo experiences where their minority status is celebrated as an attractive trait, fostering a sense of belonging and spatial attachment.
Second, "individualized care" operating within this commercial space facilitates the formation of communal relationships while simultaneously producing the exclusion of "others." The owner of A-Bar provides tailored care by meticulously understanding the socio-economic circumstances, tastes, and personalities of regular customers. Notably, this care is not a one-way service; customers reciprocate by treating the owner like family and providing economic and emotional support, thereby creating a "circulation of care." While providing safety is a crucial form of care and a prerequisite for individualized care, the owner’s "filtering" process—intended to secure the community—demarcates the category of "woman" in a way that excludes sex workers and trans women. This reveals that the strategies employed by minority communities to ensure internal safety can inadvertently reproduce a logic of exclusion.
Third, the lesbian bar serves as a pedagogical space where individuals learn, practice, and reimagine lesbian life-courses. Through interactions within A-Bar, regulars learn and reinterpret cultural codes such as "Femme-Butch" dynamics. By witnessing the lives of senior lesbians, they share concrete survival strategies, including maintaining long-term same-sex relationships, navigating dependent health insurance systems, and establishing joint financial funds. This process transforms A-Bar from a site of simple consumption into a site of learning where future lives are designed.
In conclusion, by extending the discourse of care from domestic and public spheres to commercial spaces, this study demonstrates that the lesbian bar is a "space of daily life" that guarantees the life-course development and safety of sexual minorities. It stands as a practical record of how sexual minorities care for one another and construct their own ways of life amidst the frictions of a hostile society.
