The purpose of this study is to derive instructional design principles for actualizing student agency in school music classes, based on Thomas Regelski's praxical philosophy of music education. Student agency has been emphasized as a core value in contemporary educational discourse. In response, schools have witnessed changes at the institutional and policy levels, such as diversifying student choices and providing personalized learning support. Following this trend, music education has also evolved in content and format, including the integration of popular music and digital media. However, philosophical discussions on how these methodological changes practically ensure student agency remain insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to derive specific instructional design principles to enable students to participate proactively in music classes as agents of musical praxis, grounded in Regelski's philosophy.
To achieve this, the study first examined the development of Reimer's music education philosophy and the praxial music education philosophy, and analyzed Regelski's praxical philosophy in relation to discussions on student agency. The analysis revealed that Regelski critiques the hegemonic structures of school music education and defines the essence of music as a form of praxis occurring within social contexts. In particular, he emphasized that student agency should extend beyond transitory realization within a single class and lead to sustained musical praxis throughout students' lives, highlighting the teacher's role in supporting this process. However, if Regelski's proposals for implementing student agency are applied merely as individual teaching methods or strategies, the realization of agency in school settings may remain fragmented. Based on Regelski's praxical philosophy, the study integrates his discussions on student agency and derives six design principles to guide instruction for student agency in elementary music education.
The design principles derived in this study include: ‘Student-led generation of musical purpose,’ ‘Student-led selection of modes of praxis,’ ‘Musical interaction,’ ‘Social connection of musical praxis,’ ‘Reflection and adjustment of musical praxis,’ and ‘Continuous praxis and expansion of music.’ These design principles are further illustrated through five exemplary classroom scenarios: ‘Generating purposes for music class,’ ‘Selecting and adjusting musical practice modes,’ ‘Designing collaborative structures and planning musical activities,’ ‘Musical sharing and adjustment of praxis,’ and ‘Designing subsequent praxis through reflection’—to demonstrate how they manifest in actual classroom settings.
This study contributes to bridging the gap between abstract philosophical discourse and concrete instructional design by presenting design principles and exemplary classroom scenarios for actualizing student agency based on Regelski's praxical philosophy. These principles allow for flexible application and adaptation across diverse instructional contexts. Furthermore, they can serve as actionable criteria for teachers' professional judgment in the planning and implementation of instruction for student agency. Ultimately, this research is expected to contribute to the role of school music education in fostering students' sustainable musical lives.
