Global luxury brands have continuously reconstructed the
boundaries between fashion and art through various art-related
activities, ranging from artist collaborations to the operation of
cultural foundations. This phenomenon can be conceptualized as the
process of 'Artification,' whereby brands establish artistic status
(Shapiro, 2004a). This study approaches artification as a cultural
classification process that is socially constructed and approved, and
seeks to explore the structural mechanisms through which artification is formed and received. To this end, applying DiMaggio's (1987)
Artistic Classification Systems (ACSs) as an interpretive framework,
this study aims to explore the process by which luxury fashion
brands' artification strategies are manifested and received through the
four dimensions of Differentiation, Hierarchicalization, Universality,
    and Ritual Potency.
This study identified the structural mechanisms and characteristics
of luxury fashion brands' artification strategies and examined Korean
consumers' aesthetic experiences and perceptions of brand artification.
To this end, a qualitative study was conducted combining corporate
official documents, interviews with experts involved in executing
artification strategies in the local market, and in-depth consumer
interviews. The analysis subjects were selected based on
representative luxury fashion brands that deploy artification,
combining deductive coding that applied the four dimensions of ACSs
as upper-level analytical categories with inductive coding that derived
sub-categories from interview data. Through this approach, the study
sought to cross-interpret the aspects of artification captured from
different data sources within the same classificatory logic.
The analysis revealed that from the corporate and expert
perspective, luxury fashion brands' artification operates through the
overlapping function of four dimensions, acquiring structural
sustainability. In terms of differentiation, brands position themselves
as cultural producers by describing art not as a mere communication
tool but as a fundamental resource of identity, and reclassify
craftsmanship and production processes as artistic practice by extending the art-craft continuum. Furthermore, by operating cultural
programs encompassing multiple genres including exhibitions, film,
architecture, and philosophy, brands expanded the scope of fashion
company activities into a multi-genre cultural production system. In
terms of hierarchicalization, brands connect to institutional approval
structures by forging ties with authoritative local art institutions, and
a tendency to partially internalize artistic authority production by
operating systems that evaluate and select art was confirmed. Brands
reinforced symbolic exclusivity centered on core customer segments
by restrictively organizing access to artified resources. In terms of
universality, brands presented art activities as shareable culture by
translating them into the language of public value rather than private
taste, and institutionalized the learning and transmission of value
judgment standards through educational and participatory programs,
thereby constructing conditions for the artistic meanings proposed by
brands to be recognized as socially legitimate norms. In terms of
ritual potency, patterns were confirmed whereby brands repeated
exhibitions and spatial experiences as regularized practices while
exercising restraint in the excessive exposure of commercial signifiers
and calibrating the intensity of art-commerce boundaries.
From the consumer perspective, asymmetry was observed in which
the four dimensions did not operate evenly. Differentiation was not
established by brand declaration alone; consumers approved the
legitimacy of artification only when sensory differentiation was
experienced in art collaboration products and exhibition spaces, and
compatibility with brand identity was secured. Hierarchicalization manifested as a way of evaluating brand 'caliber' and constructing
symbolic hierarchies among brands through experiential criteria such
as consistency of brand art activities, accumulated cultural depth, and
authenticity of collaborations, rather than institutional approval itself.
In contrast, universality did not emerge distinctly as an independent
structure in consumer perception, and the meaning of artification
tended to be selectively interpreted in the context of individual taste
or consumption justification rather than being generalized as socially
agreed-upon value judgment standards. Unlike these, ritual potency
was observed relatively clearly; aesthetic experiences in brand spaces
elevated contact with brands to extraordinary participation and led
consumers to perceive consumption acts as symbolic acts. This
suggests that the ritualization of experience may play a pivotal role
in the process by which artification acquires meaning for consumers.
The findings of this study demonstrate that brand artification
operates as a process of social hierarchy formation and cultural
legitimation, and constitutes a structure that is constructed and
approved through interactions among corporations, experts, and
    consumers.
This study holds academic significance in presenting an
interpretive framework for understanding how cultural legitimacy and
symbolic authority are constructed through the classificatory order,
boundary management, and ritual experience design that artification
constitutes in the luxury consumption context. This expands luxury
fashion brand research in the field of clothing and textiles to the
level of cultural perception, providing a perspective for understanding luxury consumption as interpretive participation in cultural
classificatory order beyond the individual psychological dimension.
Furthermore, this study demonstrates that artification strategies can
operate as long-term mechanisms for the accumulation of brand
equity and the formation of cultural identity. In particular, by
analyzing the Korean luxury market, which possesses high cultural
connoisseurship and familiarity with art institutions, this study holds
significance in elucidating the process by which artification strategies
    become refined
