Young adult women are situated in a life stage characterized by the simultaneous demands of academic achievement, professional performance, self-development, appearance management, and the maintenance of social relationships. These overlapping role expectations often generate persistent cognitive overload. In particular, media-driven upward social comparison and performance-oriented cultural norms tend to intensify emotional tension while weakening opportunities for authentic social support.
In response to these challenges, this study aims to develop an immersion-based healing program grounded in peri-urban forest environments and to explore the conditions and processes through which healing experiences are formed. The study site is a privately owned forest located in Hoeok-ri, Majang-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi Province (San 103-1), referred to as the Hoeok-ri Forest.
A mixed-methods research design was adopted. Based on a theoretical review, the program integrated Attention Restoration Theory (ART), Stress Recovery Theory (SRT), Sense of Coherence (SOC), flow theory, and the tend-and-befriend model. The program was implemented on site, and both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. The program consisted of meditation, physical activities, yoga, and relationship-oriented immersive practices. Program effectiveness was examined through pre- and post-emotional assessments using the Korean version of the Profile of Mood States (K-POMS), complemented by post-program interviews and participant observation.
The findings suggest that peri-urban forests facilitate the restoration of attentional resources through the ART components of being away and soft fascination, while providing a foundation for emotional stabilization through non-threatening sensory stimuli, as explained by SRT. Participants demonstrated tendencies toward enhanced comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness—key components of SOC—through autonomous activity selection and collective bodily engagement. Notably, tend-and-befriend characteristics functioned as critical factors in fostering relational safety and promoting immersion. Field observations revealed that moments of immersion did not always coincide with predetermined program transitions, indicating that immersion should be understood not as a direct outcome of healing but as a conditional state that enables healing to occur.
This study reinterprets peri-urban forests as healing environments and proposes immersion-centered program design principles that extend beyond facility-oriented approaches to emphasize sensory, bodily, and relational dimensions. Furthermore, by demonstrating the feasibility of utilizing privately owned forests, this research provides foundational insights for the development and spatial application of everyday, community-based forest healing programs.
