This study aims to address the underutilization of green spaces and the weakening of community functions in university dormitories by deriving the process and operational strategies for the creation of a community garden, using the Gwanak Student Residence of Seoul National University as a case study. University dormitories are collective residential environments where individuals from diverse backgrounds reside together, and they have the potential to promote community formation, enhance emotional stability, and encourage social interaction through green space–based activities. However, the existing green spaces of the Gwanak Student Residence often function as management-oriented landscape areas or remain neglected, which has tended to limit residents’ active use and participation.
Accordingly, this study conducted a physical analysis of the green spaces and a perception survey of residents to comprehensively examine the necessity and applicability of a community garden within the dormitory environment. In addition, based on a review of previous studies and analyses of domestic and international cases, planning directions for participatory community gardens were derived, and an empirical experiment involving the creation of two community gardens at the actual site was carried out. The empirical experiment was conducted in two phases with different participation methods and operational structures, and it was designed to ensure resident participation throughout the entire development process.
The results of the empirical experiment were found to have positive effects on improving residents’ perceptions of green spaces, increasing the frequency of use, fostering a sense of attachment to the space, and promoting voluntary management behaviors. In particular, the experiment that strengthened the resident participation–based approach indicated increased community interaction and confirmed the potential for sustained use. Based on these findings, this study proposes an operational management framework for community gardens suitable for university dormitory environments and presents operational plans, program plans, administrative collaboration strategies, and phased expansion strategies.
This study is significant in that it empirically presents the process and operational strategies of participatory community gardens within the context of university dormitories as collective residential spaces. The findings are expected to serve as foundational data and a planning model for the effective utilization of dormitory green spaces and the creation of sustainable community spaces in university residential environments.
