This study performs a philological analysis on the Naju edition of Kuunmong, a Chinese-character woodblock edition published in Naju in 1725, to identify the characteristics of Korean novel publishing. The Naju edition of Kuunmong holds a unique position in Korean literary history as the first work to bring Korean fiction into the commercial sphere and as a case where woodblocks became central to the distribution of novels.
However, as research on the variant editions of Kuunmong has primarily focused on identifying the original version or the prototype text, the Naju edition despite reflecting a significant aspect of literary history has long been overlooked. Consequently, even basic information such as the total number of extant versions and their physical conditions, has not been properly established.
Under this critical awareness, Chapter II conducts a complete survey of the Naju editions held both domestically and internationally to determine their chronological order and identify bibliographic characteristics through textual comparison. The analysis confirms that certain characters in the Jeonju edition are more accurate than those in the supplemented blocks of the Naju edition, which allowed for the identification of the specific source text used for the recarved Jeonju edition.
Chapter III examines the relationship between the Naju and Jeonju editions based on these findings. By analyzing the backing paper and records of the Naju edition, the printing period was estimated and evidence of a commercial publishing venture led by government offices but executed by the private sector was identified. Furthermore, records were discovered indicating that both Naju and Jeonju editions were not only objects of actual trade but also distributed nationwide.
Chapter IV identifies the influence of the Naju edition on subsequent versions including the Jeonju edition by comparing inserted passages across various editions. The results not only provide a comprehensive map of the Kuunmong editions but also confirm that the Naju edition exerted an absolute influence on Hangeul woodblock editions, movable type editions, and overseas translations.
Finally, Chapter V reflects on the significance of Kuunmong in the history of novel publishing. By examining the chronological changes in the catalog of printing woodblocks, the study traces the process through which the cultural status of Kuunmong became solidified. It also compares the nationwide distribution of the Naju edition and the history of commercial publishing led or overseen by the government with cases from other countries. Kuunmong opened a new era for the novel at a time when the state held a monopoly on publishing, and the Naju edition served as a powerful catalyst for that transition.
