Writing represents the most complex linguistic skill, developing after acquisition of foundational language abilities. Students with intellectual disabilities experience substantial difficulties across all quantitative and qualitative dimensions of writing due to cognitive limitations, necessitating targeted support strategies that account for their unique cognitive characteristics and challenges.
Current writing interventions for students with intellectual disabilities primarily utilize visual materials to reduce cognitive load through writing strategy and implementation of smart devices such as word processors. Recent advancements in generative AI technologies enable learners to receive immediate feedback, which enhances learning persistence, fosters realistic instructional experiences, and provides diverse educational benefits across multiple domains. Generative AI's exceptional visual content generation capabilities facilitate chatbot implementation through carefully engineered prompts aligned with instructional objectives, enabling individualized feedback customized to learners' specific characteristics and proficiency levels.
Visual support strategies that structure information have demonstrated proven effectiveness in reducing cognitive demands for students with intellectual disabilities. Graphic organizers, in particular, serve as exemplary visual support tools that enable students to memorize writing strategies, generate topic-relevant content, and organize ideas effectively. Their digital adaptability permits real-time generation by educators or learners, making integration with generative AI chatbot particularly promising for delivering immediate, personalized support.
However, existing research on writing instruction for students with intellectual disabilities mainly evaluates teacher-developed strategies without systematically validating core instructional elements. Generative AI chatbot studies target college students and adults, neglecting applications for middle/high school students with specialized needs. Thus, empirical investigation is needed into quantitative/qualitative writing changes from instantaneous graphic organizer feedback via generative AI.
This study aimed to design, develop, and validate a graphic organizer-based generative AI chatbot, then apply it to story writing activities among students with intellectual disabilities to analyze intervention effects on writing competency. Through this approach, the research sought to address limitations of text-centric AI feedback while establishing empirical evidence for graphic organizer feedback tailored to cognitive characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities.
The research comprised two phases: chatbot design/development and effects analysis. Participants included educational experts, middle/high school students with intellectual disabilities, and special education teachers.
The design phase utilized prompt engineering reflecting students' cognitive characteristics, followed by expert validation, usability testing, and performance evaluation (quantitative frequency analysis and qualitative assessments of accuracy/naturalness). The chatbot delivered graphic organizer feedback on six story grammar elements via tabular formats.
The chatbot centered feedback delivery around six story grammar elements using graphic organizers, presenting participants' story element incorporation through tabular graphic formats. Experimental procedures included pre-intervention assessments (writing performance, writing self-efficacy, visualization tendency questionnaires) supplemented by two additional baseline writing probes. Three intervention sessions featured 20-minute story writing activities supported by the graphic organizer-based chatbot, followed immediately by 10-minute post-session writing assessments and self-efficacy surveys. Post-intervention and maintenance assessments completed the protocol.
Data analysis was conducted as follows: Piecewise growth modeling examined writing competency trajectories across writing knowledge(story elements), writing fluency(total syllables, lexical diversity), and writing attitude(self-efficacy), with visualization tendency analyzed as a potential moderator variable. Maintenance effects were evaluated through repeated-measures ANOVA across pre-, post-, and maintenance timepoints, with significant differences followed by paired t-tests for pairwise comparisons. Qualitative case study analyses provided detailed examination of actual writing product changes.
The results of this study are as follows. First, prompt engineering for chatbot implementation successfully reflected cognitive characteristics and story writing contextual requirements of students with intellectual disabilities, demonstrating construct validity. Usability evaluations yielded positive student responses, while performance assessments confirmed output stability through quantitative analysis of graphic organizer format frequencies and qualitative expert ratings of accuracy, hallucination absence, and naturalness.
Second, piecewise growth modeling of unconditional models revealed distinct phase-specific trajectories: writing knowledge exhibited significant increases during intervention phases followed by significant post-intervention declines; total syllable production demonstrated non-significant changes across all phases; lexical diversity showed significant baseline increases, intervention-phase decreases, and post-intervention increases; writing attitude displayed consistent significant growth across all timepoints. These patterns confirm that graphic organizer-based generative AI chatbot effectively enhance writing knowledge and attitudes while underscoring the critical role of visual feedback in reducing extraneous cognitive load for students with intellectual disabilities.
Third, conditional growth models examining visualization tendency as a moderator revealed no significant effects on writing knowledge or fluency outcomes. However, writing attitude trajectories varied meaningfully by visualization tendency level, with higher-visualization-tendency students demonstrating greater attitude improvements from visual support. This finding indicates that even among students with intellectual disabilities, those preferring visual processing benefit more substantially from graphic organizer interventions in terms of motivational outcomes.
Fourth, maintenance effect analysis showed no significant differences across pre-, post-, and maintenance timepoints for writing knowledge and fluency. Writing attitude improvements proved significant from pre- to post-intervention, with non-significant differences between post- and maintenance phases indicating sustained intervention effects. These results suggest substantial potential for supporting foundational attitude changes essential for functional writing development during transition to adulthood.
Fifth, qualitative case analyses of student writing products across format/organization, style/expression, and content/theme dimensions revealed substantial intervention-induced improvements. Format analysis documented increased incorporation of emotional elements and story conclusions during intervention phases. Style and expression demonstrated structured growth in emotional and concrete spatial vocabulary despite persistent spelling errors. Content analysis traced progression from factual listing narratives to more imaginative situational stories incorporating pre-school routines and hypothetical scenarios.
This research validates generative AI chatbot applicability through disability-specific prompt engineering, establishing foundational implications for expanding AI learning tools targeting students with disabilities. Findings confirm that graphic organizer-based visual feedback surpasses traditional text-centric AI approaches for enhancing writing knowledge and attitudes among students with intellectual disabilities. The moderating influence of visualization tendency underscores necessity for instructional strategies accommodating diverse cognitive processing preferences beyond generalized cognitive limitations. Documented sustainability of attitude improvements suggests promising applications within transition programming and functional writing curricula essential for adult independence.
