본 연구에서는 그녀의 실천들, 「The Crystal Quilt」,「The Dark Madonna」,「The Oakland Projects」, 「우리들의 방 – 안양 여성들의 수다」,「University of Local Knowledge」를 분석 대상으로 삼아 위 프로젝트들에 내재해 있는 교수 학습 방법과 교수자와 학습자의 역할 변화를 교육학적 관점으로 조명하고자 한다.

This study aims to examine the art-educational implications of community art from the perspective of “Transpedagogy,” which signifies art projects based on pedagogical approaches within the trend of the ‘Educational Turn’ in contemporary art. Since the 1990s, educational practices focusing on knowledge production systems and relationship building have become established as forms of art within contemporary art. Artists themselves have also actively employed pedagogy as a creative method through workshops, lecture performances, alternative schools, and similar formats. This study focuses on examining why pedagogy emerged within art projects and how it has transformed both art and education.
To this end, the research analyzes the pedagogical practice of Suzanne Lacy, an artist who is also an educator. Lacy, an artist with dual identities as both educator and artist, grounded her practice in pedagogy. She systematically theorized these projects under the term “New Genre Public Art,” distinguishing them formally from traditional public art. Consequently, Lacy's projects are well-suited for exploring the meaning of utilizing pedagogy within an artistic foundation. This study analyzes her practices: 「The Crystal Quilt」, 「The Dark Madonna」, 「The Oakland Projects」, 「Our Room – Women of Anyang's Chatter」, and 「University of Local Knowledge」. It examines the teaching-learning methods inherent in these projects and the changing roles of teachers and learners from an educational perspective.
Analysis confirmed the pedagogical significance of community art in four aspects. First, it represents collaborative learning extending from the personal to the public sphere. Lacy centered participation and dialogue as core drivers, drawing individuals' private narratives into public discourse. This fostered cooperative networks within the community, laying the groundwork for cultivating the community's overall capacity for social participation. Second, it represents theme-centered integrated learning. Her work centered on the very lives of marginalized others, allowing them to express their own identities in their own voices. By enabling youth, women, elderly women, and the local community—these “others”—to articulate themselves autonomously through their own methods. Thereby, Lacy demonstrated the value of “Life-like-art.” Third, it was process-centered learning. Lacy embraced art's “imperfection,” guiding the community toward autonomous learning where they spontaneously set agendas and reflected on relationships during the transition from open to closed structures. Fourth, it involved discovering identity through multivocality. By pursuing multivocality—reflecting diverse individual voices through collaborative works—the error of othering the community could be overcome. Ultimately, community art strengthened learners' ability to critically recognize their own complex identities and speak in the public sphere.
Furthermore, we discovered that the educator's role in community art shifted beyond traditional authorialism toward the Teaching Artist model. In her own practice, Lacy maintained her identity as a visual artist while fulfilling multiple roles: planner, mediator, educator, and responder. This shift in roles suggests community art's emphasis on participation and collaboration. Community art with pedagogical elements offers significant insights by transforming passive audiences into co-producers of knowledge and presenting concrete methods for generating new knowledge.
