This study is a qualitative case study that examines resident-led gardening activities in apartment complexes, focusing on their processes of formation and operation, the multilayered meanings generated through participation, the limitations and conflicts that emerge in the course of activities, and the conditions that enable their continuity and expansion. Rather than understanding resident gardening activities merely as a hobby or as a supplementary form of landscape maintenance, this study seeks to conceptualize them as everyday, community-based activities formed through the intersection of cultural, spatial, and institutional contexts within apartment complexes, which constitute a dominant residential environment in Korea. The research subjects were two resident gardening communities within apartment complexes that have maintained sustained activities to date: Pungdadeum (“People Who Cultivate the Landscape”) and Hogardeners (“Ho-Gardeners”). Data were collected through a combination of literature review, field investigation with non-participant observation, and in-depth interviews. The collected data were analyzed using a qualitative approach informed by grounded theory, through which the formation and meanings of the activities, as well as their conflicts and limitations, were examined. The findings indicate that participation in resident gardening activities is motivated by a complex interplay of factors, including affinity for nature and plants, a desire for learning, the formation of relationships with neighbors, and a critical awareness of improving the quality of landscape spaces within apartment complexes. The meanings of these activities emerged in layered ways across personal, communal, spatial, and social dimensions, materializing as emotional stability and a sense of achievement for individuals, the formation of neighborly relationships and cooperation, qualitative changes in landscape spaces and the expansion of place identity, and the diffusion of awareness regarding garden culture. At the same time, various limitations were identified in the course of the activities, such as a shortage of participants, the accumulation of labor burdens, constraints related to budgets and operational procedures, and differences in residents’ perceptions, including negative responses. Conflicts arising from the everyday use of shared landscape spaces, differing views on the nature of gardening activities and spatial changes, and mismatches in communication processes were analyzed as inherent tensions encountered by gardening activities within the complex living environment of apartment complexes. Based on these analyses, this study demonstrates that the continuity and expansion of resident gardening activities are not automatically secured by successful outcomes alone, but are instead formed through processes of interaction and adjustment among internal community structures, the operational environment at the complex level, and external institutional contexts. This study is significant in that it reinterprets landscape spaces in apartment complexes as resident-participatory living environments and concretely shows, through case studies, the processes through which resident-led gardening activities are formed and developed.
