In this study, the structural and electrochemical characteristics of Fe–Ni bimetallic metal phosphorus trisulfide, Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3, were systematically investigated to address the structural instability and limited long-term cycling stability commonly observed in conversion-type anodes based on the MPX3 family.
FePS3 and NiPS3 possess similar crystal structures and comparable ionic radii, enabling solid-solution formation through lattice substitution. Accordingly, Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3 was selected as a representative bimetallic composition expected to combine the characteristics of both single-metal systems. The crystal structure, vibrational properties, morphology, and elemental distribution of Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3 were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and SEM/EDS analyses, while its electrochemical behavior was evaluated through galvanostatic cycling and differential capacity (dQ/dV) analysis. The results indicate that Fe and Ni ions are uniformly substituted within the MPX3 lattice, forming a solid-solution structure in which conversion reactions associated with both transition metals coexist.
Despite these structural features, the Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3 electrode exhibited limited improvement in long-term electrochemical performance compared to its single-metal counterparts. During prolonged cycling, pronounced volume expansion, structural degradation, amorphization, and increased diffusion resistance were observed, reflecting the intrinsic limitations of conversion-type electrodes.
To mitigate these issues, a MWCNT-assisted high-energy mechanical milling (HEMM) process was employed to fabricate a carbon-coated composite, Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3@C. The MWCNT-based carbon coating provided enhanced electrical conductivity, improved interfacial stability, and effective buffering against volume changes during repeated conversion reactions. As a result, Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3@C demonstrated excellent cycling stability, maintaining a discharge capacity of approximately 900 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1.0 A g-1, along with stable capacity retention at current densities of several A g-1. SEM and FIB–CP–SEM analyses further confirmed that the carbon-coated electrode maintained a mechanically stable structure with minimal thickness variation and no severe structural collapse after long-term cycling.
This work provides a comprehensive investigation of the structural and electrochemical behavior of Fe0.5Ni0.5PS3, which has been rarely reported in previous studies, and demonstrates that MWCNT-based carbon coating is an effective strategy to alleviate the structural instability of conversion-type sulfide anodes. The results offer both academic insight into bimetallic MPX3 systems and practical guidance for the structural stabilization of high-capacity conversion-type anode materials.
