This dissertation analyzes how the Department of Neuropsychiatry at Keijo Imperial University produced psychiatric knowledge and sought to secure academic prestige within the psychiatric confinement system of colonial Korea. The institutional framework of the imperial university system, the intellectual and personal structures of Japanese psychiatry, and the psychiatric confinement system in Korea constituted multiple, intersecting conditions that shaped the department’s research orientation. By examining the department’s research traditions and orientations in relation to the conditions under which actors operated, as well as the judgments and practices enacted within those conditions, this study elucidates the characteristics of psychiatric knowledge production in the specific environment of colonial Korea and Keijo Imperial University.
This dissertation pays particular attention to the fact that the Department of Neuropsychiatry consistently pursued ‘universal’ scholarly forms even within the colonial setting of Korea. By reconstructing the conditions and strategies of the actors on the basis of archival sources, this study demonstrates how colonial specificity emerged not as a presupposed motive or ideology, but through the processes and effects of knowledge production itself.
The dissertation further shows that the department’s research activities developed in ways that sought to secure academic prestige within Japanese psychiatry through universal forms of knowledge. Through the selection of research topics aligned with the disciplinary landscape of imperial psychiatry, the early adoption of experimental somatic treatments, and attempts to organize Korean cases within universal formats, the department attained a certain academic standing within Japanese psychiatry, including a leading position in research on insulin shock therapy.
At the same time, the department’s commitment to universal scholarly forms revealed clear tensions and limitations when it encountered the medical and administrative realities of colonial Korea. Institutional constraints, including the underdeveloped psychiatric confinement system, not only shaped the department’s knowledge production but also restricted the clinical applicability of its research and the expansion of the department itself. The structural asymmetry between universal knowledge forms and colonial conditions extended into critical perceptions of Korea’s medical environment and, ultimately, of the Government-General’s medical policies.
Through this analysis, the dissertation shows that Keijo’s medical faculty constituted a site where global academic norms, the research orientations of Japanese faculty, imperial governing strategies, and the realities of colonial Korea intersected. Although these elements were brought together under the hegemonic framework of the Government-General, they were assembled without organic integration. As a result, the practices of individual actors unfolded amid persistent tensions and contradictions, within which the ‘colonial’ specificity of knowledge production at Keijō Imperial University can be situated.
