During the 1970s, Korean architecture faced a period of rapid modernization and industrialization. Under state-led initiatives such as the “National Record Painting Project” and the “Cultural Property Maintenance Project,” the government actively promoted “Korean-style Reinforced Concrete (RC) Architecture”—a style that implemented traditional architectural forms using modern reinforced concrete—as a primary means of expressing national identity. This study focuses on the works of architect Ki-in Chang(1916–2001), who played a leading role in establishing and disseminating this style. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific methods by which he translated traditional architecture into modern materials and structures, and to investigate its architectural significance.
Unlike previous studies that mainly focused on Ki-in Chang’s contributions to architectural terminology and dictionary compilation, this study empirically analyzes his practical architectural works based on drawings from the Samsung Architects & Engineers archive and field surveys. The study targets 17 major projects he undertook in the 1970s, categorizing them into ‘patriotic memorial facilities,’ ‘cultural property restoration,’ and ‘public/exhibition facilities.’
The main findings of this study are as follows:
First, Ki-in Chang’s Korean-style RC architecture evolved through three structural types based on technical adaptation: ‘Wood-Concrete Hybrid,’ ‘Truss Application,’ and ‘Concrete-Only.’ In his early work, such as Nakseongdae Anguksa, he attempted a transitional experiment by mixing wood and concrete to overcome structural limitations, but eventually settled on a fully reinforced concrete structure. Furthermore, he demonstrated technical evolution by flexibly operating structures according to functional requirements, such as employing steel trusses in facilities requiring large spans like training centers.
Second, in patriotic memorial facilities, Chang attempted variations in structure and style—such as adopting Jusimpo or Haang(downward cantilever) styles—depending on the historical context and character of the enshrined figures, while still adhering to the prototype of Hyeonchungsa. Additionally, regarding roof proportions and eaves curves, his designs evolved from early steep-sloped roofs to forms that more closely approximated the aesthetic proportions of traditional wooden architecture.
Third, in public and exhibition facilities, he reconstructed elevations and sections to accommodate modern functions. In projects like the Ho-Am Art Museum and Gwangju National Museum, he vertically expanded the traditional single-story composition into a three-tiered structure consisting of a ‘plinth – body – roof,’ thereby completing a multi-storied elevation. He also presented practical solutions for securing large-scale exhibition spaces by incorporating flat slabs within the roof structure. This is evaluated as a successful translation that satisfied the spatial demands of modern architecture while maintaining the traditional exterior.
Fourth, in the restoration plan for the Hwangryongsa Nine-story Wooden Pagoda, of which no physical entity remains, he established a methodology for academic restoration by combining archaeological evidence with engineering data. Ki-in Chang derived the objective form through the cross-verification of East Asian architectural styles and validation by an advisory committee. Furthermore, he secured engineering feasibility for realizing the traditional wooden pagoda in a reinforced concrete structure through computational structural analysis and by benchmarking overseas technical precedents.
In conclusion, Ki-in Chang’s architecture was not merely a replication of traditional forms in concrete, but a result of reinterpreting traditional structural logic into modern architectural language based on accumulated survey data and structural understanding. His work served as a practical answer to the era’s challenge of “harmonizing tradition and technology” in the 1970s and holds deep significance in that it laid an important technological foundation for inheriting tradition in terms of materials, structure, and proportion in modern Korean architecture.
