Skillful forecasts on the subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) timescale, roughly 2–6 weeks ahead, are crucial for anticipating high-impact weather such as heatwaves, cold surges, and heavy precipitation, yet forecast skill at these leads remains limited for both numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems and purely data-driven models. This thesis introduces Weekast, a physics-informed deep learning framework designed to enhance S2S forecast skill by combining a modern convolutional neural network architecture with explicit atmospheric constraints. Weekast adopts a ConvNeXt-based backbone that preserves the native latitude–longitude grid, uses depth scaling instead of aggressive spatial downsampling, and incorporates Squeeze-and-Excitation modules to better represent multi-variable atmospheric fields. Physical knowledge is embedded during training through a hydrostatic balance loss term applied to mid- and upper-tropospheric layers with latitude and mass weighting, so that vertically integrated imbalances are penalized in a physically meaningful way. The model is trained on several decades of reanalysis data and evaluated on weekly-mean anomalies of 500 hPa geopotential height (Z500) and 1000 hPa temperature (T1000) at lead times up to six weeks, using anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) as metrics, and is compared against U-Net and ConvNeXt baselines as well as the Korea Meteorological Administration’s operational S2S system GloSea6. Results show that Weekast is competitive with GloSea6 at short leads and maintains higher ACC and lower RMSE at weeks 3–6, particularly for the hydrostatically constrained variant, demonstrating that relatively simple but carefully designed physical constraints can substantially improve the stability and usefulness of deep-learning-based S2S forecasts and highlighting physics-informed AI as a promising complement to traditional NWP for extended-range prediction.
