[Abstract]
This study examines the gradual waning of American Exceptionalism and the strategic rise of China through the dual lenses of technological hegemony and stock market dynamics. For decades, the United States has maintained its predominant status in the global order based on its political, economic, and financial exceptionalism. However, China’s rapid technological ascent has posed a significant challenge to this established paradigm. This thesis identifies the inauguration of the second Trump administration in 2025 as a pivotal inflection point where U.S.-led technological hegemony faced a fundamental threat from China’s qualitative technological innovations.
Utilizing the stock market as a timely barometer reflecting the trajectory of technological hegemony, this research analyzes five critical domains: artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, semiconductors, space, and quantum technology. Grounded in Endogenous Growth Theory, the study demonstrates that China’s technological progress no longer remains confined to imitation or quantitative expansion. The research substantiates China’s transition toward independent technological standardization, driven by the strategic accumulation of human capital and the attainment of critical R&D investment thresholds.
Furthermore, the study differentiates the dynamics of technological hegemony between the first and the second Trump administrations. While the first administration focused on trade disputes and geopolitical tensions, the commencement of the second administration has served as a catalyst for confirming that China’s technological self-reliance has reached a stage of maturation. The “DeepSeek shock” in January 2025 symbolically demonstrated that the U.S. no longer holds an absolute monopoly in the frontier AI competition. Moreover, the study empirically validates the “paradox of sanctions,” proving that U.S.-led restrictions have inadvertently catalyzed China’s pursuit of technological sovereignty and enhanced its total factor productivity (TFP).
Empirical findings reveal that from January to September 2025, China’s SSE Composite Information Technology Index surged by 48%, whereas the U.S. Nasdaq index rose by only 17%. This trend – a stark contrast to the performance observed during the first Trump administration – signifies that China’s technological leap is being recognized by capital markets as an independent growth momentum. Consequently, global valuation standards are recalibrating from a U.S.-centric framework toward China’s substantive technological leadership. This shift suggests that investors must transcend the inertia of U.S. financial exceptionalism and prioritize strategic asset rebalancing. Future studies are encouraged to monitor the progression of technological policies during the Trump II era and the long-term sustainability of China’s technological growth.
